Molloy and Mercy Will Battle for East Coast Conference Baseball Championship

Lions need one win to claim the title; Mavericks need to win twice

UNIONDALE, NY – The Molloy University Lions and the Mercy University Mavericks will battle for the East Coast Conference (ECC) Baseball Championship tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. The Lions are 2-0 in the tournament and need just one more win to claim the title. The Mavericks must defeat Molloy tomorrow and again on Sunday to capture the championship.

D’Youville 17, St. Thomas Aquinas 7 (St. Thomas Aquinas eliminated)
In the first game of the day, the D’Youville University Saints eliminated the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, 17-7. D’Youville led 6-3 after four innings before breaking the game open with four runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, five in the eighth, and one in the ninth.
 
All-ECC Second Team first baseman Colby Wilson, all-conference second baseman Blaise Kolbert, and designated hitter Anthony Consiglio each recorded three hits for D’Youville. Kolbert and Consiglio scored three runs apiece, while Consiglio and centerfielder Jake Hollins each drove in two runs. Saints starter Jakob Denali, an All-ECC Second Team selection, earned the victory after pitching six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out 10.
 
For the Spartans, catcher Anthony DiMarco went 4-for-5. All-ECC Second Team shortstop Nick Oelcher finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
Molloy 8, Mercy 2
Mercy struck first on a solo home run by All-ECC First Team shortstop Dylan Koch in the opening inning, but Molloy answered immediately with a solo shot from Mike Sweeney and a three-run homer by ECC Player of the Year Sean Welsh to take a 4-1 lead. The teams traded runs in the fourth before the Lions added two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to secure the 8-2 victory and advance to the championship game.
 
Welsh went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Centerfielder Joe Burriesci added three hits and scored once. Molloy starter Mike Knapp, an All-ECC First Team selection, tossed 8.0 innings, allowing just two runs while striking out 10. Mercy centerfielder Kyle Engmann went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
 
Mercy 7, D’Youville 5 (D’Youville eliminated)
In the final game of the day, Mercy eliminated D’Youville with a 7-5 victory. The game was tied 5-5 entering the ninth inning before the Mavericks took the lead on an RBI double by Zach Ashline and later added an unearned insurance run. The Saints went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end their season. D’Youville had erased a 5-2 deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Designated hitter John Nisco went 4-for-4 with two runs scored for Mercy, while Matt Hesselbirg finished 2-for-5 with three RBI. Dylan Ruland earned the win in relief after pitching 3.2 hitless innings.

For D’Youville, Colby Wilson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Garrett Wilson finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
