DOBBS FERRY, NY – Mercy University men's lacrosse senior Owen Stephenson (Glen Rock, N.J./UDC) has been named United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Second Team All-American and senior Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and graduate student Jimmy Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Newberry College) have been tabbed All-American Honorable Mention.
Stephenson is named All-American for the first time by the USILA after being named USILA Second Team All-Region earlier this week. The senior was named USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American Honorable Mention last week, was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ECC. With 55 ground balls and 31 caused turnovers across 14 games, Stephenson anchored a Mercy defense that allowed just 9.29 goals per game, which ranked Top 20 nationally. The senior close defenseman averaged 2.38 caused turnovers per game, which sat second in the conference and seventh nationally, and 4.23 ground balls per game, which finished sixth overall in the ECC but first among all non-face-off specialists. 30 of his 50 ground balls and 17 of his 26 caused turnovers came against ECC competition, including 7GB, 5CT against St. Thomas Aquinas, 7GB, 4CT against District of Columbia, 6GB, 2CT (plus a goal!) vs. Roberts Wesleyan, 5GB, 3CT vs Frostburg State, and 4GB, 3CT vs. Molloy.
Smith receives All-American honors from the USILA for the first time. The senior was named Second Team All-Region earlier this week, was tabbed First Team All-ECC and was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week once. Smith has been chosen to play in the USILA Division I/II Senior All-Star Game. The midfielder was second on the team with 46 points on 22 goals and 24 assists. Smith led the team in assists and was second in points. The senior was fourth in the ECC in assists and second in assists per game (1.71). The midfielder had a season-high nine points on six goals and three assists in the win over Georgian Court on February 18th.
Osorio takes home All-American honors from the USILA after his first season as a Maverick. The graduate student was named Second Team All-Region earlier this week and has been selected to play in the USILA Division I/II Senior All-Star Game. Osorio was named USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American Honorable Mention last week and was tabbed ECC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ECC. Osorio topped the conference in both goals per game (3.57, third nationally) and points per game (4.50, 18th nationally), Osorio put up 63 points on 50 goals and 13 assists this spring. In ECC play, the Mercy graduate student attackman topped the conference in total goals (25) and points (29), posting multi-goal efforts in all six games, including six against Roberts Wesleyan, five against District of Columbia and Frostburg State, four against St. Thomas Aquinas, three against Molloy, and two against D'Youville. All four of his helpers on the season also came across those six conference games.
