ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week 2

Co-Players of the Week

Aaron Goldstein, Staten Island
Junior | G | Staten Island, N.Y.

Goldstein averaged 27.3 points per game across a 1-2 week for the Dolphins. The CSI junior kicked off his scoring clinic with a 40-point effort in a narrow four-point loss to Tampa where he shot 52.0 percent from the field (13-of-25), 42.0 percent from three (5-of-12), and 100.0 percent from the line (9-of-9) to go with four defensive rebounds and three assists; his 40 points set CSI’s single-game record. After a 12-point performance at Florida Southern, the Dolphins returned north where Goldstein dropped 30 points on 57.0 percent shooting from the field (8-of-14) and 100.0 percent shooting from the line (12-of-12) with four defensive boards, three asissts, and three steals in CSI’s 78-69 win over Adelphi, handing the Panthers their first loss of the year. For the week, Goldstein shot 50.0 percent from the field (26-of-52), 35.0 percent from deep (9-of-26), and a perfect 100.0 percent from the line (21-of-21) with 13 rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. 

Zach Philipkoski, Daemen
Junior | Guard | New Hartford, N.Y.

Philipkoski played a prominent role in leading No. 4 Daemen to wins over No. 5 Fairmont State and Charleston last week. The junior guard scored a team-high 19 points against Fairmont State… all in the game's final 9:18. With the game knotted at 47-47, his three-pointer sparked a 17-7 run in which he accounted for 10 points. Philipkoski added five rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and three steals in the win. In Daemen's first true road game of the season, Philipkoski again came through in the clutch; his three-pointer with 59 seconds left evened the score at 79-79 and, after an empty possession by Charleston, the Daemen junior collected an offensive rebound and put the ball back up an in with five seconds left to put Daemen ahead. He finished with 16 points and four rebounds. For the week, Philipkoski averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals per game in a 2-0 week for the undefeated Wildcats. 


Defensive Player of the Week

Benjamin Bill, Daemen
Redshirt Junior | C | Hamburg, N.Y.

Bill's defensive presence anchored No. 4 Daemen to wins over No. 5 Fairmont State and Charleston last week. The Daemen big man totaled 14 rebounds (eight defensive) with three blocks while adding 16 points in 35 minutes in the 12-point win over No. 5 Fairmont State, where Bill was a key factor in holding the opposition to 63 points. Against Charleston, Bill went for 11 rebounds (five defensive) three blocks, and one steal in 36 minutes while pouring in 25 points. Across those two wins, Bill averaged 12.50 rebounds per game (6.50 defensive) and 3.0 blocks per game along with 20.50 points per game on 65.0 percent shooting while holding the opposition to 71 points per game. 


Rookie of the Week

Ky Panda-Massey, St. Thomas Aquinas
Redshirt Freshman | G | Clinton, Md.

Panda-Massey shot 58.0 percent from the field (14-of-24) and 90.0 percent from the stripe (9-of-10) to lead St. Thomas Aquinas to a 2-1 week, including 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field in an 89-72 win over Post and eight points, four assists, and three rebounds in a 93-86 win over Caldwell. 


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Tahj-Malik Campbell, Queens
Senior | F | Philadelphia, Pa. 

Campbell powered Queens past Lincoln at the Harlem Renaissance Classic with a career-high 28 points, including the game-winning basket with 18 seconds remaining. Campbell recorded his third straight 20-plus point outing, shooting 10-of-17 from the field and adding seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.

Jordan Green, St. Thomas Aquinas
Senior | C | Hagerstown, Md.

Green averaged 12.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game over three contests in a 2-1 week for STAC. The senior center tallied eight points, grabbed three rebounds, and swiped a steal in 29 minutes in an 86-70 loss to Jefferson before recording 10 points, three rebounds, an assist, and a block in 15 minutes in a 93-86 win over Caldwell. Green then posted 20 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block in 25 minutes in an 89-72 win over Post. Green shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the field and 85.7 percent (6-of-7) from the foul line in a 2-1 week.

Asa Kone, Staten Island
Senior | F | Bronx, N.Y.

Kone posted two double-doubles last week, with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Tampa and 12 points and 12 rebounds against Florida Southern. The CSI senior averaged 9.3 points per game and 11.33 rebounds per game, with 24 total defensive boards, across a 1-2 week for the Dolphins. 

Bryce Merchant, Molloy
Junior | G | Laurelton, N.Y.

Merchant found his groove this week, averaging 22.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game in three contests. The junior was also incredibly efficient, shooting 58.0 percent from the floor (26-of-45) and 57.0 percent from three-point range (8-of-14). Merchant netted a career-high 30 points against Dominican on Tuesday on the back of 60.0 percent shooting from the field while securing 10 rebounds. After putting together a 16-point game against St. Anselm on Saturday, Merchant capped the week with a 22-point, eight-rebound performance while shooting 69.0 percent on the afternoon.

Trayton Trice, D’Youville
Redshirt Senior | F | Romeoville, Ill.

Trice was effective throughout the week, averaging a double-double with 14.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. The DYU redshirt senior forward had his best game of the season against the University of Pitt-Johnstown, going for 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Trice backed that performance up with a season-high 19 points against Indiana University of Pennsylvania on 9-for-14 shooting.

Collin Woods, Roberts Wesleyan
Junior | G/F | Carpentersville, Ill. 

Woods led the Redhawks in a 1-1 week, including a 27-point performance (9-for-10 FG) in RWU’s home victory over Mansfield. The Roberts Wesleyan junior added 15 points in a road loss at Edinboro. For the week, Woods shot 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) from the field.
