St. Thomas Aquinas Claims ECC Regular Season Title, Top Seed for Second Men's Volleyball Championship

COLONIA, NJ – The bracket for the second ever East Coast Conference Men’s Volleyball Championship is set, with all four teams heading to St. Thomas Aquinas' Athletic Complex in Sparkill, NY this Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas, No. 2 Roberts Wesleyan, No. 3 Dominican, and No. 4 American International will compete for the ECC men’s volleyball trophy.

Top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas (14-9) earned its second consecutive ECC Men’s Volleyball Regular Season Championship after turning in the first undefeated regular season in conference history with a 6-0 mark.

The Spartans led the conference in assists per set (10.47), blocks per set (2.28), digs per set (9.20), hitting percentage (.238), kills per set (11.16), and opponent hitting percentage (.205, 11th nationally). Six-time ECC Player of the Week Gabriel Vieira ranks second nationally in kills per set (4.37) and fourth nationally in both attacks per set (9.46) and points per set (5.05) while four-time ECC Rookie of the Week Jannis Freude (.316) and Vieira (.302) are the ECC's 1-2 punch in hitting percentage. On the defensive end, David Weiss ranks third nationally in blocks per set (1.22) while six-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week Ivaylo Todorov sits sixth nationally in digs per set (2.53). 

STAC will host No. 4 American International (4-19, 0-6 ECC) in Friday afternoon's first semifinal. The Yellow Jackets average 26.25 team attacks per set and 8.64 digs per set, both of which rank third in the conference. One-time ECC Player of the Week Willie Lopez Morales ranks second in the ECC in kills per set (3.21) and third in points per set (3.64) and attacks per set (7.79) while one-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week Fabian Lugo sits third in digs per set (2.06). 

STAC bookended the month of March with a sweep of AIC, winning 3-0 at home on March 1 and 3-0 in Springfield, MA on March 29.

Friday afternoon's second semifinal will see No. 2 Roberts Wesleyan (10-17, 3-3 ECC) take on No. 3 Dominican (6-21, 3-3 ECC) for the second year in a row. 

The Redhawks and Chargers went as deep as possible into the ECC's tiebreaker policy, with Roberts Wesleyan earning the No. 2 seed on a coin toss on Sunday evening's pre-championship call.

DUNY earned the first win of the regular season in Rochester, NY with a 3-1 road victory on March 1, but RWU evened out the series with a 3-1 road win in Orangeburg, NY on March 28. 

The Redhawks lead the conference in aces per set (1.35) and team attacks per set (28.63) and rank second in assists per set (10.00), digs per set (9.12), kills per set (10.80), and opponent hitting percentage (.237). Five-time ECC Setter of the Week and six-time ECC Rookie of the Week Landon Brouwer tops the ECC in assists per set (8.58) while five-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week Moises Jimenez ranks second in digs per set (2.52, eighth nationally). 

The Chargers rank second in the ECC in aces per set (1.17) and blocks per set (1.84). Blake Krapf tops the ECC in aces per set (.360) and sits second in points per set (3.67) and attacks per set (8.09) and third in kills per set (3.08) while Daniel Malcom (.836) and Tommaso Falchi (.750) are two of the top four shot blockers in across the conference.

Tickets for each match of the championship can be purchased in advance here. Ticket prices will be $10 for adults, $5 for students (with ID), senior citizens and children; children under 5 will be admitted for free. Cash will not be accepted, so those wishing to purchase tickets at the venue must still use the ECC ticket website to purchase them (QR code to scan with a smartphone will be available at the gate).
