ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week Nine

Co-Player of the Week

Malik Brooks, Roberts Wesleyan
Senior | Guard | Lockport, N.Y.

Brooks dropped 32 points on 7-of-12 FG and 16-of-19 FT to go with four rebounds, two assists, and a steal to lead Roberts Wesleyan to a 107-102 win over nationally-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas, handing the Spartans just their third loss of the season and first defeat in ECC play. Brooks had also recorded nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals in an 89-83 win over Mercy. The Roberts Wesleyan senior tops the conference in field goal percentage (57 percent) and ranks second in total points (264) and points per game (20.3). 


Co-Player of the Week

Sunnie Diamond, Queens
Senior | Guard | Atlanta, Ga.

Diamond led the way in a 2-0 week for the Knights averaging 18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 2.5 steals, and 2.0 blocks with one double-double. Diamond began the week recording a game-high 23 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and one block in the ECC victory over Molloy. In the non-conference victory against Goldey-Beacom, Diamond recorded 14 points, matched a career-best 12 rebounds alongside seven assists, three blocks, and two steals. Diamond leads the ECC in total assists (69) and assists per game (4.9) and tops the conference in minutes per game (36:12). 


Defensive Player of the Week

Malik Bentinck, Queens 
Senior | Forward | Queens, N.Y.

In a 2-0 week for the Knights, Bentinck averaged 14.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.5. blocks, and 1.0 steals with one double-double. In the ECC victory over Molloy, Bentinck tallied eight points, eight rebounds, two steals, and one block. In the non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom, the Queens senior tallied his seventh double-double of the year with a career-best 20 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Bentinck ties for first in the conference ranks 10th nationally in double-doubles (seven) and sits second in the conference in rebounds per game (9.0).

ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Shamar Chester, Queens
Junior | Guard | Queens, N.Y.

Chester averaged 12.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.5 blocks in a 2-0 week for Queens. Chester began the week notching 13 points with a career-best nine rebounds, six assists, and one block in the ECC victory over Molloy. In the non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom, the junior tallied 11 points, while matching a career-high nine rebounds to go with six assists, two blocks, and one steal.

Jayden Dewaal, Mercy
Senior | Forward | Toronto, Canada

Dewaal averaged a team-high-tying 15.5 points per game on 56.5 percent shooting with a team-high 13.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in two games this week. The senior opened the week with 19 points, 14 rebounds and six steals on 8-of-13 shooting against Bloomfield on Wednesday. The forward ended the week with 12 points and 13 rebounds at Roberts Wesleyan on Friday. 

Messiah Mallory, Staten Island
Junior | Forward | Watervliet, N.Y.

Mallory set a CSI single-game program record with 8 blocks in Friday's win over Daemen University and came close to a triple-double as he scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. The junior also added 3 more blocks on Tuesday against the University of Bridgeport giving him 11 for the week and 31 for the season.

Rich Smith, St. Thomas Aquinas
Sophomore | Guard | Bronx, N.Y.

Smith dropped 26 points, while shooting 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the field in 32 minutes of action for the Spartans last weekend at Roberts Wesleyan. The sophomore guard also grabbed five boards, dished off one assist, forced four steals and blocked two shots in the contest. 

Bryce Waterman, Staten Island
Graduate Student | Forward | Colonie, N.Y.

Waterman averaged 18 points per game this week across two outings and led CSI in scoring with 19 points in the team's win over Daemen on Friday. In the Dolphins victory, the graduate student was 5-6 from beyond the arc making for yet another week in which he shot above 50 percent from deep. Waterman finished the week shooting an even 50 percent from the floor and continues to lead the conference in three-point percentage and three-pointers made by a wide margin.
