WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – For the third consecutive season, Roberts Wesleyan, Mercy, D’Youville, and Molloy have qualified for the East Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
Semifinal action gets underway on Thursday, May 2 on the campus sites of the higher seeds. The championship game of the tournament will be hosted on Sunday, May 5 by the highest remaining seed at a time to be determined.
Roberts Wesleyan (11-5, 6-0 ECC) will be the tournament’s top seed after going undefeated in conference play for the first time in program history. The Redhawks closed their regular season with a thrilling, 12-11 come-from-behind victory over the Mavericks on Friday to clinch their first outright regular-season title.
RWU’s semifinal opponent will be No. 4 Molloy (8-7, 3-3 ECC), as the Redhawks and Lions will meet in the conference tournament for a sixth straight season. Molloy won the first two meetings, but Roberts Wesleyan has taken the postseason matchup in each of the past three years.
The teams met in regular-season action on March 28, where the Redhawks came away with a 13-7 road win over the Lions. Attacker Annie Mulhall hit the back of the net six times, midfielder Emma Blumenstock notched a game-high eight points on two goals and six assists, with half of them going to Mulhall, and midfielder Sophia Podszebka recorded a game-high 14 draw controls. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Shawna Lesmerises made seven saves vs. seven goals allowed in the full 60:00.
The other semifinal will see No. 2 Mercy (8-9, 5-1 ECC), the two-time defending champions, hosting No. 3 D’Youville (7-9, 4-2 ECC), who finished the regular season with its best conference record in program history, for the third year in a row.
The teams met in regular-season action on April 12, where the Mavs dominated with an 18-8 home win over the Saints. Mercy was led by the offensive trio of Leah Hansen (5g, 1a), Leena Moussa (4g, 2a), and Andrea Mott (1g, 7a) while Lindsey Shimborske posted a game-high eight draw controls alongside a pair of caused turnovers early on.
