Hooksett, N.H. – After advancing to the winner's bracket yesterday, the third-seeded No. 25 LIU Post baseball team outlasted second-seeded No. 17 Southern New Hampshire University in a 4-3 thriller on day two at the NCAA East Region II Championship Friday afternoon at Penmen Field.
Junior Noah Lorenzo was outstanding for the Pioneers as he earned his tenth win of the season. In 8.0 innings he struck out five, didn't allow a walk and only allowed one run. Freshman Joshua Loeschorn picked up his third save of the season, striking out one and not allowing a run in his one inning.
Redshirt junior Andy Camilo went 3-for-4 while also adding a stolen base. Sophomore Christopher Wasson finished with two hits, three RBI along with two runs scored and senior Dave Brehm contributed one hit, one RBI and a stolen base. Freshman Giovanni Ciaccio, senior Anthony Vaglica and senior Michael Manzione also had hits for LIU Post.
The Pioneers looked promising in the top of the first after a leadoff single to right field by Ciaccio and Brehm reaching on a fielder's choice but LIU Post was unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities
While Manzione and Camilo were also able to tally early hits, it was the Penmen who put the first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.
The tide turned in the top of the seventh; Ciaccio drew a walk then stole second. Wasson followed by sending the ball sailing over the left field fence for a two RBI homer, giving the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage.
LIU Post would add two more runs in the bottom of the ninth after Wasson ripped an RBI single to left center then Brehm had an RBI single through the right side to give the Pioneers a 4-1 advantage.
Southern New Hampshire was able two add another two runs, but LIU Post managed to hold on for the 4-3 triumph.
The Pioneers will play for a spot at super regionals tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. with an opponent to be determined.
