ECC Baseball Report - Week One

Player of the Week

Kolongi Goins, Mercy
Junior | OF | Poughkeepsie, NY

Goins hit .417 (10-for-24) with five RBI, six runs, two doubles, and two stolen bases as Mercy went 5-4 to open the season. The junior opened the season going 1-for-3 against Goldey-Beacom on February 13 before going 2-for-4 in the win over Goldey-Beacom on February 14. The outfielder then went 3-for-4 with three RBI, a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored in the win over Post on Friday. Goins then went 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a double in the game one win over Adelphi on Saturday. The junior ended the week going 1-for-3 against Bentley on Sunday. 


Pitcher of the Week

Mike Knapp, Molloy
Redshirt Sophomore | P | Levittown, NY

Knapp took the mound for his first career start against Bridgeport on Friday and tossed a gem. The right-hander pitched six scoreless innings, scattering just two singles while striking out a career-high 11 Purple Knights, including sitting down six consecutive batters via the strikeout in the third and fourth innings to collect the victory.


Rookie of the Week

Michael Flashner, Staten Island
Freshman | SS | Staten Island, NY

Flashner finished his first weekend as a Dolphin with a .333 average (4-for-12), driving in two and scoring a run of his own. The CSI freshman shortshop also hit his first career home run on an inside-the-park shot at The Ripken Experience on Sunday. Flashner drew two walks as well and posted an OPS of 1.012 during the team's first five games.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Caleb Cassie, Queens
Senior | RHP | Vancouver, British Columbia

In his first start of the year on Friday afternoon against Adelphi, Cassie went 5.0 innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs, and a career-high 11 strikeouts. The senior right-handed pitcher began the first two innings of his final year striking out four of the first seven batters he faced, including a clean inning in the top of the second. In the top of the fifth, Cassie would strike out all three batters to finish with a new career-high in strikeouts and conclude his first outing of the year.

Rob Jacobsen, Queens
Senior | 2B | Temecula, CA

In five games played in Myrtle Beach, Jacobsen batted .357 with a 1.234 OPS, 643 slugging percentage, and .591 on base percentage, recording five hits, one double, one home run, eight walks, four runs scored, and six RBI. The Queens second baseman recorded two multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games. In the Saturday DH sweep over Post, Jacobsen recorded two hits, two runs scored, a home run, and four RBI, including the game-winning, two-run shot over right field to complete the sweep. 

Peyton Jemison, Mercy
Sophomore | 3B | Monroe, NY

Jemison hit .387 (12-for-31) with a team-high nine runs to go with three doubles, three stolen bases, a home run, three RBI and a triple as Mercy went 5-4 to open the season. The sophomore went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in the season opener against Goldey-Beacom on February 13th. The third baseman then went 1-for-3 with a home run, three runs and two RBI in the win over Franklin Pierce on February 16th. Jemison went 2-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases in game two against Franklin Pierce. The sophomore went 1-for-3 with a run at nationally-ranked UNC Pembroke on Tuesday before going 3-for-5 with a run in the win over Post on Friday. Jemison ended the week going 3-for-7 with three runs and two doubles in the sweep of Adelphi on Saturday. 

Blaise Kolbert, D’Youville
Junior | 3B/RHP | Lancaster, NY

In game one of the Saints' doubleheader on Sunday, Kolbert tossed 1.1 shutout innings, striking out two batters and allowing two hits. In game two, Kolbert started in left field and went 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk, collected an RBI, and scored a run.

Chris Polemeni, Staten Island
Sophomore | OF | Staten Island, NY

Polemeni put together a huge weekend at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, finishing 7-for-15 (.467) with four extra-base hits in five games. Among the four hits that went for extra bases were three doubles and the sophomore's first home run of the season. He also drove in two runs and scored three times, posting an OPS of 1.423 during the team's Spring Training trip.

Dylan Schriver, Molloy
Freshman | P | Rising Sun, MD

Schriver made his collegiate debut in Molloy's 9-2, season-opening win over Bridgeport. In relief, the freshman pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four to collect his first career save.

Sean Serrano, Molloy
Junior | LF | New City, NY

Serrano provided a spark in the bottom third of the Lions lineup making all four starts in a 3-1 opening weekend. The junior outfielder collected a hit in all four games he started in, highlighted by a three-RBI performance against Bridgeport where he collected his first home run on the campaign. On the weekend, Serrano hit .357 totaling five hits, four RBI, three runs scored, two doubles, one home run, and one stolen base.

James Sill, Molloy
Sophomore | 1B/P | Levittown, NY

Sill made his collegiate debut this weekend for Molloy at first base and making a start on the mound. At the plate, the sophomore collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs in the Lions’ victory over Bridgeport on Friday. The right-hander got the start on the mound on Sunday against Post and put together a strong outing. Sill tossed six innings while scattering four hits while not allowing an earned run and striking out nine. 

Mike Vilardi, Queens
Sophomore | UTL | Massapequa, NY

Vilardi recorded a team-high .375 batting average with a 1.046 OPS, .625 slugging percentage, and .421 on base percentage, tallying six hits, a team-high four doubles, two runs scored, two RBI, and two walks. The Queens sophomore right fielder recorded two multi-hit games, including a 3-for-6 day with two runs scored, one double, and one RBI in the run-fest game against Bridgeport. On the mound, Vilardi made his first start of the year on Saturday as he pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, two walks, and five strikeouts.

Gordon Votruba, Mercy
Freshman | P | Wading River, NY

Votruba had a 2.08 ERA in 4.1 innings with two strikeouts and one save. The freshman pitched 2.0 innings with three runs allowed against Goldey-Beacom on February 13th. Votruba pitched 2.1 shutout innings with one strikeout to earn the save in Mercy's win over Adelphi on Saturday. 

Diego Wirz, Mercy
Junior | P | Stamford, CT

Wirz went 1-0 on the mound with a 1.80 ERA in 10.0 innings with six strikeouts in two starts. The junior opened his season pitching 4.0 innings with two runs allowed and one strikeout in the win over Goldey-Beacom on February 14th. The pitcher ended the week pitching 6.0 shutout innings with just three hits allowed and five strikeouts to earn the win over Adelphi on Saturday.
