ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week Eight

Player of the Week

Aaron Goldstein, Staten Island
Sophomore | G | Staten Island, NY
Goldstein provided the Dolphins with a huge offensive spark from beyond the arc this week averaging 21.0 points per game and making twelve threes in a 1-1 week. On Thursday against Virginia Union, the sophomore hit seven of his fourteen three-point attempts and scored 23 points with four rebounds and five assists. In Saturday's 99-75 victory over Wilmington, Goldstein scored another 19 points and shot 5-of-9 from downtown with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. For the week, he shot 54 percent from the field and averaged 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest. 


Defensive Player of the Week

Messiah Mallory, Staten Island
Senior | F | Watervliet, NY
Mallory averaged 18.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game this week as the Dolphins went 1-1. The CSI senior's week was highlighted by his 26-point, seven-rebound, and four-block effort in CSI's 99-75 win over Wilmington on Saturday. Mallory also connected on five threes in the win.

Shaun Arnold, St. Thomas Aquinas
Sophomore | G/F | Indianapolis, IN

Arnold averaged 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game over two contests last week for STAC. The sophomore guard/forward tallied 17 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out two assists, swiped two steals, and blocked a shot in 22 minutes in an 87-85 setback to Bloomfield before recording 13 points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals in 28 minutes in an 81-74 victory over Virginia Union. Arnold shot 48.0 percent (10-of-21) from the field, 50.0 percent (3-of-6) from beyond the arc, and 88.0 percent (7-of-8) from the charity stripe.

Hartnel Haye, St. Thomas Aquinas
Graduate Student | G/F | Camden, NJ

Haye had a strong defensive week as STAC split a pair of non-conference home games. The graduate student guard/forward averaged 12.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game for the Spartans. In the 87-85 loss to Bloomfield, he tallied six points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out an assist, swiped two steals, and blocked a shot in 21 minutes. He followed up with 18 points, six rebounds, an assist, and a block in 27 minutes in an 81-74 win against Virginia Union. Haye shot 42.0 percent (10-of-24) from the field.

Derrick James, St. Thomas Aquinas
Junior | G | Columbus, OH

James averaged 13.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per game over two contests last week for STAC. The junior guard tallied 13 points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out six assists in 34 minutes in an 87-85 setback to Bloomfield before recording 13 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals in 29 minutes in an 81-74 victory over Virginia Union. James shot 50.0 percent (11-of-22) from the field and 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from beyond the arc.

Rob Matos, Molloy
Sophomore | G | Fredericksburg, VA

Matos led with 29 points in Molloy's victory over Saint Anselm. The sophomore shot 50 percent from the field (12-24) with a career-high 12 field goals, adding three three-pointers. The sophomore also led the contest with six assists and added two rebounds and a steal. 

Bryce Merchant, Molloy
Sophomore | G | Laurelton, NY

Merchant set a career-high 28 points in Molloy's victory over Saint Anselm this week. The sophomore shot 11-15 (73%) from the field and 5-8 (62%) from three-point range, sinking a career-high five treys. Merchant also topped the team with two steals and added five rebounds and three assists.
