ECC Men's Basketball Report - Week Eight

Player of the Week

Nick MacDonald, Daemen
Fifth-Year | Guard | Amherst, N.Y.

MacDonald poured in 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field with a pair of three-pointers to lead Daemen to a 71-55 win over nationally-ranked #18 Post; the fifth-year guard scored 14 of his career-high 22 points in the second half to help the Wildcats outscore post 45-30 after halftime. MacDonald added 10 points in a 90-50 win over Cheyney. Over the pair of wins, MacDonald shot 63 percent (12-of-19) from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. MacDonald leads the ECC and ranks 16th nationally in free throw percentage, converting 91.1 percent from the stripe. 


Defensive Player of the Week

Joey Atkins, Daemen
Graduate Student | Forward | Watervliet, N.Y.

Atkins headed up a defense that limited its two opponents to just 105 points (52.5 per game) and 32-percent shooting from the field (40-of-126) in a pair of Daemen wins and averaged 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals over the two games. The Daemen graduate student forward totaled 18 points, nine rebounds (eight defensive), two blocks, and two steals in a 71-55 win over nationally-ranked #18 Post, the fewest points scored by the Eagles this season. He followed up with six points, two blocks, and two steals in limited minutes in a 90-50 win over Cheyney. Atkins leads the ECC in total rebounds (124), blocks (27), and steals (26).


Rookie of the Week

Nasir Hammonds, D’Youville
Redshirt Freshman | Guard | Norfolk, Va.

Hammonds had a solid game for the Saints this past weekend against Salem University, securing his first double-double of his career with 11 points while grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds. Hammonds was also a solid on the defensive end, coming away with a career-high four steals and a career-high two blocks.


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Malik Bentinck, Queens 
Senior | Forward | St. Albans, N.Y.

Bentinck led the way with his sixth double-double of the year with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to go with one block and two steals as the Knights earned an 83-68 non-conference victory over Georgian Court Saturday afternoon.

Taj Chiles, Mercy
Junior | Guard | Harlem, N.Y.

Chiles had 17 points and a game-high 10 assists on 7-of-12 shooting in Mercy's 81-65 win over Cheyney on Wednesday. The junior also added four rebounds and three steals in the win. 

Jayden Dewaal, Mercy
Senior | Forward | Toronto, Canada

Dewaal had a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds on 11-of-19 shooting with a game-high two blocks in Mercy's 81-65 win over Cheyney on Wednesday. 

Messiah Mallory, Staten Island
Junior | Forward | Watervliet, N.Y.

Mallory helped lead the Dolphins to a win over Franklin Pierce with his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. At the defensive end, the junior blocked four shots and collected three steals as CSI defeated the Ravens, 93-86.

Bryce Waterman, Staten Island
Graduate Student | Forward | Colonie, N.Y.

Waterman led the Dolphins in scoring with 20 points in a 93-86 win over Franklin Pierce this past weekend on an efficient 8-of-14 from the field.  He was also 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, including a pair of clutch baskets that helped the Dolphins fend off a late comeback bid by the Ravens in the victory. Following Saturday's effort, Waterman continues to rank top-5 in the conference in field goal percentage, and he leads the conference in both three-point percentage and three-pointers made per game.
