Staten Island, N.Y. - For the second straight year, Roberts Wesleyan won both the men's and women's ECC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
In the men's championship, despite only having four winners out of the 18 scored events on the evening, the Redhawks dominated, outpacing runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas by a margin of 164-122. Roberts won seven of the 20 scored events, five of which were individual along with two relay victories, as well as having student-athletes score a point in 18 of the events.
The Redhawks winners on the evening were Aaron McGinnis (long jump, triple jump), Justin Bender (5000m run), and Keith Pease (1000m run). McGinnis became the first male athlete to sweep an event all four years of a career with a record-tying leap of 6.82 meters in the long jump.
Like the men, Roberts' women dominated the field, winning by a 49 point margin over District of Columbia. Also like the men, the women's Redhawks won four of the 18 scored events with numerous other top finishers in scoring position.
Chelsea Hayward led the way for Roberts Wesleyan, pacing the field in both the 60m and 200m dash. Other Redhawk winners include Rachel Hutchinson (1 mile run) and Kasey Smith (pole vault).
It was also a record shattering day at the brand new Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, as 19 championship meet records were tied or broken, including nearly all of the women's track records. Records are denoted with a # in the list of event winners below.
