District of Columbia Women and Molloy Men Capture First Ever ECC Indoor Track and Field Championships

South Huntington, N.Y. - The University of the District of Columbia women and the Molloy College men were victorious in the inaugural East Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship held at St. Anthony's High School on Saturday afternoon.
District of Columbia took home a narrow victory over the Georgian Court Lions, 151-145. The Firebirds picked up six individual titles and two relay titles on the way to the championship.
In all, five different Firebirds won individual titles, led by Shauna Kay-Creary's two. Kay-Creary was the top performer in both the long jump (5.77 meters) and high jump (1.68 meters). In addition to her top finishes, Kay-Creary picked up points for District of Columbia in three other events, coming in second in the 200 meter dash and triple jump and third in the 60 meter dash.
Kaydian Jones (200 meter dash – 25.71), Rochelle Nelson (400 meter run – 58.85), Marlena Wright (500 meter run – 1:19.56), and Simone Grant (triple jump – 11.70 meters) also were individual winners.
District of Columbia's 4 x 200 meter relay team of Callister Jones, Jerily Benjamin, Shemeia Barnes, and Kaydian Jones was first across the finish line in a time of 1:45.93, while their 4x400 meter relay squad of Marlena Wright, Jerily Benjamin, Rochelle Nelson, and Simone Grant was a top finisher with a time of 4:04.97.
Georgian Court was close behind the Firebirds, winning four individual titles of their own. Susan Lora won the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.83 seconds, Chanel Rogers topped the 60 meter hurdles in 9.06 seconds, Tiffany Okieme tossed the shot put 13.95 meters, and Alyssa Hudgins threw 18.60 meters in the weight toss.
Queens' Indira Avila was another impressive performer on the day, winning both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs in time of 10:19.31 and 17:44.88 respectively.
The men's event was tightly contested as well with Molloy squeaking out the victory over St. Thomas Aquinas, 163-159.
St. Thomas Aquinas actually outpaced Molloy in individual and relay titles by a margin of eight to four and had the same amount of second and third place finishers, but the Lions beat the Spartans by a wide margin in fourth, fifth, and sixth place finishers to capture the championship.
Molloy's first place finishers included Mike Dioguardi (500 meter run – 1:10.07), Mike McShane (one mile run – 4:38.68), Nick DiBenedetto (5,000 meter run – 15:48.17), and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Eric Haslbauer, Mike Darnell, Conor Gallagher, and Mike McShane.
St. Thomas Aquinas' Mike Abelard was the only two event winner on the men's side, capturing both the 60 and 200 meter dashes in times of 7.05 and 23.25 seconds.
