NYIT and Daemen Volleyball to Compete in NCAA Championship

Indianapolis - New York Institute of Technology and Daemen College will represent the East Coast Conference in the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship beginning on December 1. NYIT earned the conference's automatic bid by winning the ECC Championship last weekend, while Daemen earns an at-large berth and will host the East Regional.

Fresh off winning their first ECC title since 1990, NYIT is back in the tournament for the fifth time in the past six seasons and also earn the No. 1 seed in the East Region portion of the 64 team bracket. The Bears, who enter the tournament with a 28-5 record, are attempting to repeat as East Region Champions after winning for the first time in program history a season ago.

NYIT will take on No. 8 seed, Adelphi University (20-12), who is making their 10th straight NCAA appearance, in the opening round. The matchup is a rematch of an East Regional Semifinal from a year ago, a match in which NYIT was victorious, 3-0. The two schools also met earlier this season with the Bears coming away with a 3-1 victory.

Daemen continues their season of firsts with their selection as the No. 2 seed. After winning the program's first-ever ECC Regular Season Championship and debuting in the ECC Championship, the Wildcats earn their first-ever NCAA berth on the heels of a 23-7 record. The team also becomes the first Daemen team to ever be selected to compete in an NCAA Tournament after the school transitioned to active Division II members in the 2015-16 season.

The Wildcats will have home court advantage as hosts of the East Regional. Their opening round opponent is Post University. The Eagles (26-5) are making their third straight NCAA appearance. This will be the second-ever meeting between the two schools, after Post took a 3-0 victory early in the 2015 season.

The other matchups in the East Regional will be No. 4 American International (25-6) vs. No. 5 Le Moyne (22-6) and No. 3 New Haven (19-8) vs. No. 6 Philadelphia (29-4).

NYIT holds a record of 6-1 against teams in the bracket this year, defeating Post, American International, New Haven, and Adelphi, and taking two of three against Daemen on the year. Daemen has a mark of 1-3 after losing two of three to NYIT and falling in an early season matchup against Le Moyne.

Tournament play will begin on Thursday, December 1 in Lumsden Gymnasiu on Daemen's campus in Amherst, New York and will continue until the East Region Final on December 3. The winner will then advance to the Elite Eight that begins on December 8 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
