Garden City, N.Y. – The Golden Lions volleyball completed a 3-0 sweep this afternoon over the Franklin Pierce University Ravens in their opening match in the East Region of the NCAA tournament. The Golden Lions improved their season record to 26-7 with this win.
Dowling took command of the match taking the first set 25-18. The Golden Lions got out to an early lead in the 2nd set leading 5-2 but the Ravens fought back keeping the game close throughout the set. A kill by Sophomore Mikalah Hughes gave Dowling the set 25-18 and a 2-0 lead in the match. The Golden Lions were able to finish off the sweep 25-18 to advance in the NCAA tournament.
Leading the way for the Golden Lions was junior Weronika Wiezik who recorded a match-high 15 kills. Hughes contributed 11 kills and 5 blocks in the three set victory. AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year Taylor Takeda finished with 18 digs in the match. Senior setter Kayla Dillman dished out 35 assists.
The Ravens receives a team-high 7 kills from Aiden Garcia. Leading the Ravens defense was Hannah St. Jean who recorded 7 blocks and Sarah MacHugh who collected 23 digs.
The Golden Lions advance to play the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in the next round of the NCAA tournament. They will look to avenge their two losses to the Purple Knights from earlier this season. The match will be played Friday Decemeber 4th at Adelphi University, start time 5:00 PM.
