Four ECC Volleyball Teams Selected for NCAA Tournament

Indianapolis - For the third time in four years, volleyball teams from the East Coast Conference will make up half the bracket in the East Region of the NCAA Division II Championship tournament. Bridgeport earned the conference's automatic bid by winning the ECC Championship last weekend, while Dowling, NYIT, and LIU Post all earn at-large berths.

Fresh off winning their fourth straight ECC title, Bridgeport will appear in the NCAA Championship for the eighth year in a row. The Purple Knights are the No. 2 seed in the bracket after finishing with a 25-8 record on the season.

Bridgeport's first round opponent is No. 7 seed, New Haven. The match is a rematch of last year's East Region Championship game, which New Haven won to advance to the Elite Eight. The two schools met earlier this season as well, with New Haven taking a 3-2 decision on September 16.

Dowling is back in the field as the No. 3 seed after a string of 13 straight NCAA appearances was snapped in 2014. The Golden Lions, who finished with a 25-7 record, will battle No. 7 seeded Franklin Pierce in the first round. The two teams went head to head on October 30 as well, with Dowling coming away victorious, 3-0.

After advancing to the final of the ECC Championship, NYIT comes in as the No. 4 seed in the East Region. With a 25-7 record, the Bears are also back in the NCAA bracket after missing out in 2014. With their at-large berth, NYIT has now been in the NCAA Championship in four of the past five seasons.

NYIT will have a familiar first round foe in Northern Boulevard neighbor and No. 5 seed, LIU Post. The Pioneers are making their fourth straight NCAA appearance, and fifth in six years, after compiling a 23-10 record on the season. It will be a rubber match between the conference rivals, as the two schools split their two matches earlier this season.

The No.  1 seed and hosting duties go to Northeast 10 Champion, Adelphi. The Panthers finished 26-4 on the season with wins over ECC members Bridgeport and NYIT. Dowling was the lone East Region squad to beat Adelphi this season, doing so by a 3-0 margin on September 16.

Post University, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Champion, rounds out the bracket as the No. 8 seed and Adelphi's first round opponent.

Tournament play will begin on Thursday, December 3 and will continue until the East Region Final on December 5. The winner will then advance to the Elite Eight that begins on December 10 in Tampa, Florida.
