Bridgeport Battles But Falls In NCAA East Regional Volleyball Final To New Haven, 3-1

Bridgeport, Conn. - The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team saw its outstanding 2014 season come to a close at home on Saturday night with a 3-1 defeat against the University of New Haven Chargers in the Finals of the NCAA Division II East Regional.  UB closes out the 2014 with a 26-3 overall record.  UNH heads to the NCAA Division II Elite 8 in Louisville, Kentucky with a 24-8 mark.  New Haven won Saturday night's match by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 14-25, 25-17.

The Purple Knights were forced to play just about the entire match on Saturday with two-time East Coast Conference Player of the Year and 2014 Daktronics East Region Player of the Year, Biljana Savic (Graduate Student, Novi Sad, Serbia), who suffered a leg injury just six points into the match.  UB battled throughout the evening, but New Haven's talent and depth proved to be just a bit too much, as the Chargers captured Regional Title number 13 in school history.

Senior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) led Bridgeport with 19 kills, and she closed out her UB career with a double-double notching 16 kills.

Giovana Soares (Grad. Student, Sao Paulo, Brazil) also recorded a double-double for the Purple Knights with a match-high 42 assists and 13 digs.

Junior Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) had 16 kills and nine digs for Bridgeport, and senior Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) also reached double-digit kills with 12.

Senior Margo Meteyer led the New Haven offense with 10 kills.
