Shen's (So., Nanjing, China) match-high 21 kills with a .400 attack
percentage, the top-seeded University of Bridgeport women's
volleyball team captured the 2012 ECC Championship with a four-set,
23-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-20, win over the third-seeded LIU Post
Pioneers in Bridgeport's Hubbell Gym on Saturday evening.
Saturday's victory is the Purple Knights' thirteenth in a row, and
ups the team's overall record 25-4. By virtue of claiming the
ECC crown, the team's second in the last four years under head
coach Leo Uzcategui, UB receives an automatic bid to the NCAA 2012
Division II Championship Tournament which will begin on Thursday,
November 29. This year's NCAA appearance will be the Purple
Knights fifth consecutive NCAA trip. LIU Post is now 23-14 on
Sophomore Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) had an excellent ECC Finals match recording a double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs, and she also chipped in four service aces.
Larissa Oliveira (So., Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was a force at the net for the Purple Knights crushing nine kills with no errors on 18 attacks for a .500 attack percentage and recording four block assists.
Bridgeport setter Fernanda Silva (Brasilia, Brazil) directed the UB offense with 46 assists and notched a double-double with 10 digs. Silva also contributed three service aces.
Senior libero Taylor McBeth (Langley, B.C., Canada) amassed a game-high 19 digs plus had four assists and two service aces for the winners.
Lisa Delfs had 12 kills and nine blocks to lead LIU Post. As a team, the Pioneers racked up an impressive 16 total blocks on the night.
Bridgeport will find out its NCAA opponent when the entire NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship field of 64 is announced at 10:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.
