Old Westbury, N.Y.- After earning the East Coast Conference regular season title earlier this week, the Dowling Volleyball team swept the University of Bridgeport (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) to be crowned the 2010 ECC Champions. Patrycja Klekotka, an All-Conference first team member, was named the tournament MVP.
Dowling, ranked 23rd in the country by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), faced a Purple Knights team that was No. 1 in the region for three weeks until the Golden Lions took over the top spot in the latest rankings after downing Bridgeport, 3-0, in their latest meeting. With each team owning a win over the other during the regular season, a conference championship would be on the line as well as a chance to host the NCAA Regional Championship.
Dowling started of the match with a quick 25-15 victory, holding the edge in hitting at .375 compared to Bridgeport's .156. The Purple Knights were able to regain some strength in the second, holding a 19-13 advantage before Dowling went on a 12-4 run to earn the set win. The Golden Lions were then able to put the match away with a 25-17 victory due to costly errors by the Purple Knights.
Dowling held an edge in all categories, outblocking Bridgeport while also racking up 10 service aces, 4 of which came from Klekotka. The Golden Lions hit a modest .188 in the match but it was more than enough as the Purple Knights finished with .094.
Klekotka, who earned 16 points off 6 kills, 6 service aces, and 6 blocks, was joined by Chelsea Callahan (5 kills, .417 hitting) in the winning effort. Jessica Van Wieren would be relentless at the net, tallying 7 kills on .500 hitting and adding a service ace and 4 digs.
Bridgeport Graduate student Agatha Bakiddawa-Mukisa led the Purple Knights and all players on the night in kills with 11. She also had four blocks (two solos) to lead the team while senior Terry Masava had nine kills on the day.
Both teams will await the NCAA Championship selection announcement that will be released this Sunday at 10:00 PM and can be viewed by visiting www.ncaa.com.
