Dowling and Bridgeport to Meet in ECC Volleyball Final

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The University of Bridgeport volleyball team advanced to the 2010 East Coast Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Final with a straight sets, 25-14, 25-21, 25-17, win over the host NYIT Bears on Friday night on Long Island.  With the win, UB is now 23-3 overall.  New York Tech's record slips to 20-12.

The Purple Knights, the defending ECC Champions, will face the Dowling College Golden Lions in tomorrow night's conference title match that will begin at 7:00 p.m. on NYIT's campus.  Bridgeport and Dowling have split their two matches so far this season with Bridgeport winning, 3-1, at home (Dowling's only loss so far in 2010), and the Golden Lions sweeping the Purple Knights on their home court.

In Friday night's win, graduate student Agatha Baliddawa-Mukisa (Jinja, Uganda) led the UB offense with a match-high 17 kills.  She also registered an impressive .556 attack percentage for the evening.  As a team, Bridgeport's offense clicked at a .404 attack percentage versus the Bears.

Senior Terry Masava (Nairobi, Kenya) had a double-double on the night with 16 kills and 11 digs.  Masava notched a .448 attack percentage for the winners.

Junior Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led the UB defense with 13 digs.

Setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil) had 35 assists for the Purple Knights.

Old Westbury, N.Y. - Patrycja Klekotka tallied 19 kills in No. 23 Dowling's 3-0 victory over the Pioneers of C.W. Post University in the ECC Semifinals, advancing them to the championship match versus the University of Bridgeport this Saturday. 

Klekotka, who hit an even .600 in the three-set match, was joined by Maja Potpara who recorded a double-double with 24 assists, 24 digs while adding 4 service aces and 3 kills.  The Golden Lions made short work of the Pioneers in the first set, taking them down with a 25-11 final.  Dowling, who hit .314 in the opening set, was helped by a -.050 percentage posted by C.W. Post.

The second stanza had the Golden Lions falter a bit in their hitting (.244), but took the win regardless with a score of 25-15.  They then took the victory with a 25-15 win in the third set.

C.W. Post finishes the 2010 season with a 20-12 record while Dowling improves to 26-1 on the year. 

The Golden Lions will now face Bridgeport in the ECC Final this Saturday at 7:00 PM.  Bridgeport, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, currently holds a 23-3 overall mark after defeating the New York Institute of Technology in their ECC semifinal matchup.
