Central Islip, N.Y. - The University of Bridgeport Purple Knights and the Dowling College Golden Lions each earned three first place votes and a total of 44 points to share the top spot in the ECC Volleyball Preseason Poll, as voted upon by the league’s coaches. Junior right side Maja Potpara from Dowling has been named the Preseason Player of the Year for the second time.
Dowling and Bridgeport battled throughout the 2009 season. Dowling earned the Regular Season Title after an almost perfect conference season as they dropped just one match to the Purple Knights, their first conference loss since 2003. The two met in the ECC Championship finals with Bridgeport coming out on top of a five game battle. Claiming the top two seeds at the NCAA Regional, the two teams found themselves in another Championship title battle, this time for a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals. Dowling defeated the Purple Knights in four sets to secure the East Region crown. The Golden Lions fell in the Quarterfinals to finish the season with a 29-7 overall mark. The Purple Knights were 33-7 on the season.
C.W. Post earned one first place vote and compiled 32 points for the third spot on the poll. C.W. Post was 14-14 in 2009 with an 8-4 record in conference play.
Potpara, a two-time ECC Player of the Year and 2008 AVCA Rookie of the year helped lead the Golden Lions to the 2009 NCAA Division II East Regional Title. She ranked in the top-three on the team in kills, service aces, digs, block assists, and total blocks and was named an AVCA Third Team All-American.
