
Player of the Week
Alyssa Morra, Queens (Jr., #1 Singles, #1 Doubles, Bronx, N.Y. /
Spellman) – Posted a 4-1 singles record and was 3-0 at
doubles for the week. She posted 6-0, 6-0 victories over Adelphi
and St. Thomas Aquinas, and a 6-1, 6-1 win against New Haven. At
the ITA Tournament, she won her first round match 6-1, 7-6 (1)
before losing 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. In doubles, she won 8-1
versus Adelphi and New Haven and 8-0 at St. Thomas Aquinas.
Rookie of the Week
Laura Mocodeanu, Queens (Fr., #2 Singles, #2 Doubles, Hyde Park,
N.Y. / FDR) – Posted a 4-1 mark at #2 singles and was 3-0 at
#2 doubles. She won two of her singles matches 6-0, 6-0 (Adelphi
& New Haven) and the other 6-1,6-1 (St. Thomas Aquinas) and won
her first round match at the ITA Tournament 6-0, 6-1 before losing
in the second round.
ECC Notebook
St. Thomas Aquinas: The Lady Spartans had a 0-2 week, losing to
Queens, at home, by a score of 8-1. Then on Thursday they dropped a
tight 5 - 4 match to C. W. Post.
New Haven: The University of New Haven went 1-2 last week, falling
to preseason favorite Queens and Dowling by identical 9-0 scores
before rebounding to down Molloy 8-1. That puts the Chargers'
record at 3-2 overall this season and 2-2 against ECC opponents.
Rookies Chelsea Annese and Alison Mahony each won their matches
against Molloy, at third and sixth singles, respectively. Mahony
also captured the first set against Dowling before falling in a
third set pro-set, 10-8. Annese, Mahony and Leah Smith are all tied
for the team lead with 3-2 records so far this season. UNH plays
four times this week, including three times at home.
Queens: Alyssa Morra was 4-1 in # 1 singles and 3-0 in #1 doubles
for the week. She posted 6-0, 6-0 victories over Adelphi and STAC
and a 6-1, 6-1 win against UNH. At the ITA Tournament Alyssa won
her first round match 6-1, 7-6 (1) before losing 6-0, 6-0 in the
second round. In doubles, she won 8-1 versus AU and UNH and 8-0 at
STAC. Laura Mocodeanu was also 4-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles
for the week. Like Morra, she won two of her singles matches 6-0,
6-0 and the other 6-1,6-1 and won her first round match at the ITA
Tournament before losing in the second round.
Dowling: Dowling claimed a 9-0 conference victory over New Haven
but slipped to Concordia 5-4. Claiming to forfeit victories against
the Clippers, Diane Kobisuik (#3 singles) and Jen Tripp (#5
singles) were the only Golden Lions to defeat their opponents. Both
Diane and Jen advanced to day two of the ITA's at Bloomsburg after
defeating their opponents, however both fell in the first round on
Sunday.
Molloy: The Lady Lions captured their first victory of the 2007
season with a 9-0 victory over Post University. Molloy lost to
Adelphi, 9-0, on September 19 and were defeated by New Haven, 8-1
on September 20.
Concordia: The Clippers started off the 2007 season with three
wins this week. The Clippers began the week with a 5-4 win over
Adelphi on Monday, a 6-3 victory against C.W. Post on Wednesday and
a 5-4 decision over Dowling on Thursday. Sophomore Somadi Druker
and junior Celise Sesanker both went undefeated in singles and
doubles competition in the three matches. Senior Amy Boyd was also
unbeaten for the week in both singles and doubles play.
