Queens College senior Dominika Bajuk defeated Concordia College freshman Ananda Ferrari, 6-4 in the third and final set of the number one singles' match that decided the 2006 East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Team Tournament title in Bronxville, NY on Friday afternoon, as Queens bested Concordia, 5-4. Bajuk, the 2004 and 2005 Conference Player of the Year defeated Ferrari, 5-7, 6-3, and 6-4.
Friday's match was the completion of action that was suspended by darkness on Thursday tied 3-3 in the third set. With the win, Queens raises its record to 10-1, and Concordia is now 9-3.
When play resumed in the deciding singles' match, Bajuk broke Ferrari to take a 4-3 lead which she never relinquished on her way to the 6-4 final set win, as both players held serve from that point on.
In action on Thursday, Queens took the early lead, as the Lady Knights won two of the three double matches, with Afiya Lahens and Jessie Franklin winning at number two, 8-4, over Concordia's Llenka Hladikova and Ferrari after the number one (a Concordia win) and three (a Queens win) double slots were split by identical 8-4 scores.
Concordia came back to tie the match at 4-4 winning three of the five singles matches, as Somadi Druker won at number two (6-1, 6-4), Llenka Hladikova won at number three (6-3, 6-3) and Celise Sesanker took the point at number four (6-1, 6-1).
Queens got singles wins from Jennifer Merideth at number five (6-0, 6-1), and Andrea Condur at number six (6-1, 6-1).
Friday marked the second time this season that match between Concordia and Queens has been decided by a 5-4 score, as the Clippers defeated the Lady Knights during the regular season.
Queens has now won five consecutive women's tennis conference championship tournaments.
