Baden Player of the Week
Tricia Lee, Bridgeport (Sr., OF/P, Long Beach, Calif. / Saddleback College) - Hit .400 (12-30) over 10 games, slugged .767 (3 HR, 2 2B) with six runs scored, six RBI and went 3-1 on the mound with a 1.62 ERA. In a 4-3, 8-inning loss to Caldwell in game one of a DH, hit two home runs including one in the bottom of the seventh sending the game into extra innings. Had six appearances (4 GS) on the mount, limiting the opposition to a .181 average (30.1 IP, 19 H), with 25 strikeouts and eight walks. Spun a two-hit shutout (6K) over NYIT (4-0).
Baden Pitchers of the Week
Samantha Yodowitz, CW Post (Sr., Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) - Posted a 4-0 record with a 1.03 ERA, tossing two shutouts, striking out 22 in 26.1 innings and allowing only three runs. Opponents hit just .194 against her. Added a .375 mark at the plate.
Nina Cesare, NYIT (Jr., Whitestone, N.Y.) - Posted a 3-0 mark with a 1.69 ERA in four appearances, allowing four earned runs on 14 hits with 17 strikeouts and three walks. All three of her starts were complete games, including a six hit, seven strikeout shutout performance against Molloy.
Baden Rookie of the Week
Courtney Garland, New Haven (Fr., 2B, East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow) - Hit .308 with a double and two runs batted in. She also scored two runs during the week. Garland started every game at second and had a 1.000 fielding percentage with six put-outs and four assists.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In the most recent NCAA Northeast regional
top 10 poll (4/23), C.W. Post was No. 1, Adelphi was No. 3, New
Haven was No. 5 and NYIT is No. 9 ... In the most recent NFCA
National Poll, C.W. Post was ranked No. 11, while Adelphi was
receiving votes.
CW Post: The 11th-ranked Pioneers posted a 6-2
week, including a 5-1 ECC record. They end the regular season
with a 41-14 overall record and an 18-2 conference record.
The Pioneers clinch the East Coast Conference Regular Season title,
and have won six of the last seven ECC Regular Season titles dating
back to 2002. The 41 wins also marks the first time in
program history the Pioneers have broken the 40-win barrier in
regular-season play. C.W. Post has the number one seed for the
upcoming ECC Tournament.
New Haven: The Chargers went 3-1 during the week finishing up the regular season winning seven of eight to up their overall record to 23-17. With a 12-8 conference record the Chargers have locked up the #3 seed for the ECC Tournament. Sophomore Meghan Walter led the Chargers at the plate hitting .500 during the week with a .786 slugging percentage and a .533 on base percentage. Walter had seven hits, including a double and a home run, two runs batted in. Senior Meg Brown had a team-high four runs batted in along with scoring three times to account for seven of the team's 17 runs. In the circle, sophomore Breanne Gleason had a 2-0 week pitching 15.0 innings and striking out 21 batters. Gleason held her opponents to a .224 batting average and had a 2.33 ERA.
NYIT: Junior pitcher Nina Cesare helped the
Bears to a 5-1 mark in ECC play with a 3-0 record. With their sweep
of Mercy on Saturday, the Bears improved to 29-14, breaking the
all-time mark for wins in a season of 27. Cesare, who improved to
19-4, posted a 1.69 ERA in four appearances, allowing four
earned runs on 14 hits with 17 strikeouts and just three walks. All
three of her starts were complete games, including a six hit, seven
strikeout shutout performance against Molloy. Junior Lauren Sabia
batted .353 with six hits, two doubles and five RBI to help the
Bears to a 5-1 mark, all ECC contests, on the week. Junior Lia Lara
and sophomore Lisa Boystak both batted .333.
Bridgeport: UB went 5-5 last week, as the team
enters this week's action with a 22-22 overall record.
Bridgeport finished with an 11-9 ECC mark, and the team will enter
this week's conference championship tournament as the number five
seed. The Purple Knights hit 11 more home runs last week to raise
their season total 36. Tricia Lee who hit .400 last week with 3
home runs and six RBI, is the team's leading hitting so far in 2008
with a .353 batting average. Lee also went 3-1 as a pitcher
last week with a 1.62 ERA. Amanda Wentz leads the team in home runs
and RBIs so far this year with 11 long balls and 29 runs batted in.
Senior Brittany Steiner fired a no-hitter against Nyack on April
23rd in which she struck out 11 batters. Only two Nyack
players reached base in the game; one on a walk and the other on an
error.
Dowling: In a week packed with conference match-ups the Golden Lions finished out the week 3-5, 9-11 overall in the ECC. In the doubleheader split (10-3, 2-10)against STAC Kacie Pinto (Islip, NY) went 4-7 and 4 runs scored with Jackie Hannan (Sayville, NY)adding two hits and 2 RBIs. Against the Lions of Molloy, Dowling dropped the first game 0-2, but bounced back to take game two 11-1. Hannan again led the offense with 3 hits on the day including a homerun and 4 RBIs. Against New Haven, the Golden Lions shut out the Chargers 4-0. Stephanie Plochochi kept New Haven scoreless scattering 5 hits over seven innings. The Chargers topped DC in game two 5-4 in 8 innings. With Taras Wallace (Barnaget, NJ) walking all 8 times at the plate Hannan stepped up providing 5 RBIs on the day along with DeMeo blasting 4 hits. In the final matchup of the regular season the Golden Lions were swept by the Adelphi Panters. Game one was all Adelphi as DC was only able to produce 2 hits in the 5-0 shutout, but in game two both team woke up the bats combining for 42 hits and 31 runs (18-13). For the Golden Lions Pinto went 4 for 6 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. DeMeo pitched in with 2 hits including a 3 run homerun. The Panthers rallied with 2 outs in the top of the 9th for 5 run to take the win.
Molloy: The Lady Lions finished their 2008 season with an overall record of 22-24. This past week, Molloy dropped two games to NYIT, two games to C.W. Post and split with Dowling. Erin Rut, Amanda Havdoglous, Allie Sydor and Graziella Minnici each had five hits. Michelle Walsh recorded three hits and two RBI. Amanda Havdoglous picked up the lone win on the mound.
Queens: Katie Miracco drove in one run and scored the other in the Lady Knights' 2-1, game two win at C.W. Post College on Wednesday afternoon. Miracco's two out single, one of four hits for her in the game, drove home Sara Koumou in the top of the first inning for the first run of the nightcap. In the sixth Miracco doubled and scored the go-ahead run on a two out single through the right side by Samantha Stallone. Jessica Hicks tossed a six hitter for a complete game victory ... Senior Jessica Hicks pitched a three hit shutout to record a 1-0 win over Holy Family University in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader played in Old Westbury, New York on Sunday. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. Nicole Mancusi, who began the Lady Knights rally with a single, advanced to second when Danielle DiGioia reached on an error by the second baseman. Both runners moved up a base on a Miracco ground out, setting the stage for pinch hitter Sara Koumou. With one out and runners on second and third, Koumou came through with a base hit, scoring Mancusi with the winning run. Jessica Hicks struck out five in going the distance for the victory.
Concordia: The Clippers lost their season finale to Adelphi 3-1 and 4-0. Freshman Dena Frederick batted .571 (4-7) in the two games. Junior Julie Walsh went 3-6 with a double. Freshman Jaime Lorenzo led the Clippers this season with a .403 batting average. Walsh led the team with 30 hits, 18 runs and 16 RBI on the season. The Clippers finish the 2008 season with a 9-21 overall record and a 5-15 ECC record.
Mercy: The Mavericks (9-30, 2-18 ECC) went 0-6 last week with all games against ECC opponents. Freshman Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY) led the Mavericks in batting with a .333 average. Kowalski went 2-for-3 in game two of a doubleheader against New Haven. Senior Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) batted .313 with three runs batted in and one run scored. She went 2-for-3 in game two against NYIT. In game one against New Haven, she went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Freshman Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, NJ) batted .313 and freshman Chelsea Methot (Bristol, CT) led the team with one home run and four RBI. On the season, Methot leads the team in batting with a .362 average, 42 hits, 20 runs scored and 18 RBI. She is tied for the team lead in home runs with three and doubles with eight. Madick is batting .315 with two home runs, 13 RBI and 12 runs scored. The Mavericks will wrap up its season on Tuesday, April 29, in non-conference action against Briarcliffe College.
