Player of the Week
Vlad Malkin, Concordia (Sr., Moscow, Russia / Hildegar-Vou Binger Gymnasium) - Went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles as part of a 3-0 team week. Won at No. 1 doubles vs. St. Thomas Aquinas (8-2) and No. 2 doubles vs. Bloomsburg (8-5). Lost at No. 2 doubles (8-4) at Binghamton. He went on to win at No. 5 singles at St. Thomas Aquinas (8-0), at No. 6 singles vs. Bloomsburg 6-4, 6-2 and won at No. 5 singles at Binghamton (6-4, 3-6, 7-5), rebounding from 4-1 down in the third set.
Rookies of the Week
Mehdi Rhazali, Mercy (Fr. No. 2/No. 2 / Rabat, Morocco / Moulay Youssef HS) - Went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 1-1 in No. 2 doubles last week. He opened up with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Drew Slocum of Millersville, and Jose Rodriguez of Bryant 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6. He also posted a doubles win (8-4) at Millersville. The lone doubles defeat was against Bryant (9-8 (7-3)).
David Burstein, Queens (Fr., #3 singles, #2 doubles, East Rockaway, N.Y. / Lynbrook) - Was 2-0 in both No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles while not losing a game in singles play. Against Millersville, he won 6-0, 6-0 (8-3 doubles) and added an 8-0 win in singles and 8-0 victory in doubles against St. Thomas Aquinas.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In the most recent ITA Division II poll (4/2), Concordia was ranked No. 12 and Mercy was ranked No. 45 ... In the most recent East regional poll (3/31), Concordia was No. 1, Mercy was No. 4, Adelphi was No. 6, and Queens was No. 8 and Dowling was No. 9 ... The ECC four-team championship tourney takes place this week with No. 1 Concordia hosting No. 4 Adelphi and No. 2 Queens hosting No. 3 Mercy Tuesday. Both matches start at 2:00 p.m. The championship moves on to the highest remaining seed Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
Concordia: The Clippers went 3-0 this past week and have won 10 straight matches overall. The Clippers claimed the top seed in the upcoming ECC Men's Tennis Tournament with a 9-0 win over STAC on Tuesday. Over the weekend, the Clippers defeated Bloomsburg University on the road 9-0 and downed Division I Binghamton University 4-3. Senior Vlad Malkin came back from a 4-1 deficit in the 3rd set to defeat Gregoire Berner 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at #5 singles to give Concordia the 4-3 win. The 12th ranked Clippers are 14-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the ECC. Concordia will host the ECC Men's Tennis Tournament at the Meyers Tennis Center in Bronxville, NY on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Clippers will take on the 4th seeded Panthers of Adelphi University on Tuesday. The winner of that match-up will face the other semi-final winner on Wednesday afternoon, which pits the 2nd seeded Queens College Knights against the 3rd seeded Mercy College Mavericks.
Queens: Fabio Minami won at second singles,
6-1, 6-2 and teamed with David Burstein to post a 8-3 win at second
doubles in the Knights 7-2 win at Millersville University. David
Burstein was also instrumental in the win at Millersville, winning
his singles match without dropping a point. Taylor Crabill, Robby
Scheuing and Ariel Nassin added singles victories with Scheuing and
Nassin combining for a 8-4 doubles win ... David Burstein and Ariel
Nassim did not lose a game in singles or doubles in the Knights'
8-1 win at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday. Burstein won 8-0
at third singles and combined with Fabio Minami to post an 8-0 win
at #2 doubles. Nassim did the same at #6 singles and teamed with
Robby Scheuing to win at third doubles, 8-0.
Mercy: The Mavericks (4-6, 3-2 ECC), tied for No. 45 in
the latest national rankings, split a pair of non-conference
matches last week. Mercy defeated Millersville 6-3 on
Wednesday before getting edged at Bryant, 5-4, on Sunday.
Against Millersville, the Mavericks won the top five singles
matches. Senior Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) is ranked No.
10 in the region in singles. The duo of junior Yusufcan
Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) and freshman Mehdi Rhazali (Rabat, Morocco)
is No. 7 in the region, and juniors Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St.
Georges) and Carl Johnson (St. John, Antigua) are ranked No. 9 in
the region in doubles. Mercy will visit Queens College on Tuesday
in the ECC Team Championships.
