Player of the Week
Keith Henderson, NYIT (Jr., Port Jeff Station, NY, ATT) - Scored a career-high eight goals and added an assist to lead the #2 Bears past St. Anselm, 17-11. Henderson netted four goals during an 8-1 run for NYIT that brought them back from an 8-6 deficit.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Frank Melhus, Dowling (Sr., Levittown, NY) - Registered 10 saves,, allowing one goal in 45 minutes and pulled in eight groundballs as part of an 18-3 victory over Franklin Pierce.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In this week's USILA Division II national top 10 poll, NYIT is No. 2, C.W. Post is No. 4, Dowling is No.5, Molloy is No.8 and Mercyhurst is No. 9.
C.W. Post: No. 4 C.W. Post added two wins this week to improve to 6-0 overall. At Briarcliffe, junior Dave Loftus and freshman Marc Andreassi each scored two goals as the Pioneers won the game by a 14-3 margin. Against Seton Hill, junior attacker Greg Cerar scored one goal and assisted on four as C.W. Post finished the game outscoring the Griffins by a 9-0 count. In the two games, the Pioneers outscored their opponents, 29-8, and held opponents to a .185 shooting percentage. This weekend, the Pioneers will match up against top-ranked LeMoyne College on Mar. 15 and will look to go 7-0 on the season.
NYIT: Junior Matt Messina (Sayville, NY) scored three goals and added two assists in the Bears 17-11 win over St. Anselm on Saturday.
Molloy: Molloy was scheduled to play St. Michael's on Saturday, March 8 but the game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
Dowling: Dowling played host to Franklin Pierce, defeating the Ravens by a final score of 18-2. Six different laxers scored for the Golden Lions led by Kyle O'Brien's 11 points (7G, 4A). Frank Melhus was outstanding in a spot start recording his first victory of the season allowing only 1 goal in 45 minutes, making 10 saves and scooping up 8 groundballs. Dowling hosts Pace on Wed. 3/12 at 4:00 and travels to S. New Hampshire on Sat. 3/15.
Mercyhurst: In a rematch of the 2007 Division II Championship game, the Mercyhurst Lakers men's lacrosse team never found an offensive rhythm against the Le Moyne Dolphins, suffering a 17-1 loss Sunday. Sophomore Derek Pino scored his first goal of the season and the lone tally for the Lakers late in the third period. The high powered Dolphin offense never allowed the Laker defense a moment for breathing room, firing off 42 shots to the Lakers' 18. Eleven different players scored for Le Moyne and nine of the 17 goals were assisted. The Dolphins played a smooth and steady offensive game, scoring at least four goals in each period. Mercyhurst falls even to 2-2 this season.The Lakers will regroup to open its home opener against No. 3 Limestone Saturday at 1 p.m.
Adelphi: The Panthers fell to third ranked Limestone, 17-5, getting three goals from Dale Pescitelli. Adelphi returns to action on March 11 against Mars Hill and then face Bentley on March 15.
