Top Seeded Golden Lions Open ECC Tournament With 14-0 Win Over Bridgeport

Brookhaven, N.Y. - The top seeded Dowling College baseball team puts up ten runs in the bottom of the sixth and cruise to a 14-0 win over the University of Bridgeport this afternoon in the opening game of the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament.  The Golden Lions improve to 32-13 on the season and advance to face Molloy College on day two.
 
The Golden Lions opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles up the middle from Adam Schuster and Andrew Abreu.  John Cruz followed with a double in the left center gap bring in Schuster from second scoring the game's first run.  Two batters later, JC Brandmaier doubled in Abreu giving the Golden Lions a 2-0 lead.
 
Dowling doubled their lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second chasing UB starter Brian O'Keefe from the game.
 
The next three and a half innings went quietly before the Golden Lions batted around for ten runs in the bottom of the sixth.  In the inning, the Dowling took advantage of a costly Bridgeport error while racking up six hits including a two RBI triple from Rob Veltre, his sixth on the season breaking the Dowling College single season and career triples record.
 
ECC Pitcher of the Year, Tyler Badamo, went on to retire the Purple Knights in order in the seventh before yielding to the bullpen where Jason Perez and Dave Montiverdi were flawless in the final two innings.
 
Badamo improves to 8-3 on the season striking out nine Purple Knights in seven innings of work.
 
Taking the loss for Bridgeport was O'Keefe allowing four runs on six hits in 1.2 innings on the mound.
 
Dowling out hit UB 18 to 6 with Schuster pacing the Golden Lions at the plate going 4 for 5 with three runs scored.  Cruz and Brandmaier provided three hits apiece.
 
The Golden Lions will face Molloy College tomorrow, May 9th at Golden Lions Field.  Game time is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
