Bridgeport, Conn. - Senior right-hander
Jonathan Russell (Boynton Beach, Florida) of Queens College has
been selected as this week’s East Region National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Pitcher of the Week for games
played from March 31-April 6, 2014.
Russell, the East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, went 2-0 on the week with a 0.00 ERA. He tossed a complete game shutout over Bridgeport, in which he struck out a career-high 17 batters while allowing just two hits. In two innings in a relief appearance against Nyack earlier in the week, he struck out five bringing his strikeout total to 22 in only nine innings of work on the week.
In other NCBWA related news, the Dowling Golden Lions and St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans continue to be ranked in the East Region poll.
Dowling moved up two spots to No. 4 after finishing off a series sweep of Bridgeport and splitting a double-header with Dominican last week to run their record to 17-8 on the season. The No. 4 spot is their highest ranking on the season to date.
St. Thomas Aquinas stays at No. 6 in the poll for the second straight week. The Spartans, who boast a 16-10 mark on the season, went 4-2 on the week.
LIU Post continues to receive votes in the poll as well. The Pioneers sit in third place in the ECC standings with a 4-3 conference mark and a 10-8 record overall.
