WEST HAVEN, Conn. (May 13, 2010) – The C.W. Post baseball team was held to just one run and six hits by the 24th-ranked Franklin Pierce Ravens in the first round of the NCAA East Regional, as the second-seeded Ravens defeated the fifth-seeded Pioneers, 8-1, on Thursday afternoon at Yale Field.
Franklin Pierce improves to 37-14-1, while C.W. Post drops to 31-16-1.
C.W. Post spotted the Ravens four runs in the bottom of the first, as FPU took advantage of three walks issued by starter Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) and capitalized with four hits in the inning as they took the early lead.
The Ravens tacked on another run in the second inning as Mike Munoz (Bronx, N.Y.) singled and scampered home on a double by Phil Hendricks (Pittsfield, Maine).
The Pioneers put a run on the board in the third inning as senior center fielder Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) singled in freshman Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.).
Budkevics settled down and tossed four scoreless innings, but
FPU starter Jose Macias (Bronx, N.Y.) was equally effective in
shutting down the Pioneers. C.W. Post did threaten in the seventh,
as they loaded the bases against Macias, but freshman catcher
Anthony Corona’s (Carmel, N.Y.) line drive was snared by the
Ravens shortstop to end the inning.
Franklin Pierce tacked on two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth as ended with an 8-1 victory.
Offensively, the Pioneers were led by two hits apiece from Graczyk and Callaghan. Budkevics posted a final line of 6.0 innings pitched, giving up five runs on eight hits, walking five and striking out five. Macias went eight innings and allowed one run on six hits, striking out six and walking three.
C.W. Post will face game one loser Dominican College tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
