Dowling Selected to Claim 2010 ECC Baseball Title

Central Islip, N.Y. - With five first place votes and 47 total points, the defending East Region Champion Dowling College Golden Lions has been tabbed as the 2010 ECC baseball Preseason favorite.  Molloy College holds the number two spot while St. Thomas Aquinas rounds out the top three.

The Golden Lions had a very successful 2009 campaign in which they amassed a 35-18 overall record and a 15-9 record against conference opponents.  Dowling fell to Adelphi in the ECC Conference Tournament Finals before meeting them again in the NCAA East Regionals, where they fell again in the first round and then topped them twice in the final to claim the 2009 East Region Championship.  The win propelled Dowling into the College World Series for the first time in school history.  Dowling picked up a win against No. 1 UC San Diego, and then fell to Lynn University and then UC San Diego to be eliminated. 

Molloy grabbed two first place votes and amassed 43 points to claim the No. 2 spot on the Poll. Last season, Molloy compiled an overall record of 26-19 and an ECC record of 15-8, while advancing to the second round of the ECC Playoffs.  St. Thomas Aquinas finished 2009 with an overall record of 25-23 and an ECC record of 15-9.  The Spartans earned the Number 3 seed in the ECC Playoffs but fell in the first round to Adelphi and Dowling.

Molloy senior outfield T.J. Greig has been selected as the 2010 Preseason Player of the Year in addition to beginning name a 2010 NCBWA Pre-Season All-America Honorable Mention earlier this year.  In 2009, he compiled a .364 batting average on 68 hits, 26 runs, 33 RBI's 7 doubles, 1 triple and 5 homeruns.  Greig accumulated a .492 slugging percentage, a .425 on-base percentage and had 9 stolen bases on the season.  These numbers earned him NCBWA All-East and Daktronics All-Northeast First-Team accolades, ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region Second Team honors and the 2009 ECC Player of the Year Award.

Gabriel Duran of Dowling College has been tabbed the 2010 Preseason Pitcher of the Year.  Duran had an outstanding sophomore campaign in which he was selected to the ECC All-Conference First Team; ECAC All-Star First Team; Daktronics, NCBWA, and ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team and earned Pitcher of the Year accolades in the ECC, ECAC, NCBWA, Daktronics and ABCA/Rawlings.  During the 2009 season, Duran compiled a 1.30 ERA which placed him third in Division II and he set a single season program record with ten wins and two losses while adding two saves.  In 89.2 innings, Duran limited the opposition to 45 hits and recorded 83 strikeouts.  He led all of Division II by allowing only 4.52 hits per nine innings.
