PHILADELPHIA- PA. - Southern Connecticut State University junior
outfielder Karl Derbacher and Franklin Pierce University junior
pitcher Mike Adams have been named the Northeast Region Player of
the Year and Northeast Region Pitcher of Year respectively as the
2008 Daktronics Baseball All-Northeast Region team has been
announced.
Derbacher, the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference selection, helped lead the Owls to the Northeast-10 Tournament Championship Round after finishing the season second with a 24-6 conference record. The Northford, Connecticut native ranks among the conference leaders in all major offensive categories. Derbacher ranks first in doubles (19) and runs batted in (51); second in batting average (.413), hits (83), stolen bases (28) and on-base percentage (.500); third in slugging percentage (.557) and triples (5). He is also ranked among the NCAA Division II leaders in batting average, triples, on-base percentage and stolen bases.
Adams, the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-Conference selection, helped lead the Ravens to the Northeast-10 Championship and the #1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Northeast Regional. Adams currently is tied for the conference lead in wins with a 9-1 record. The Orchard Park, New York native also leads all of NCAA Division II with an earned run average of 0.98 in 92 innings of work and has pitched two complete games with 91 strikeouts. Adams is second in the NE-10 in innings pitched and third in opposing batting average (.169). Nationally, Adams also ranks eighth in hits per nine innings and is amongst the top 20 in strikeouts.
Rounding out the 2008 Daktronics Northeast Region First Team are Brian Testa of Wilmington (utility), Derek Ingui of Franklin Pierce (designated player), Jim Fuller of Southern Connecticut State (starting pitcher), Brian Honeyman of Queen's (starting pitcher), Bobby Kay of C.W. Post (starting pitcher), Tyler Bishop of Franklin Pierce (relief pitcher), Chris Irwin of Molloy (catcher), Cody Levins of Nyack College (1B), Mike Baillargeon of Assumption (2B), Jason Alexander of Bryant (3B), Scott Savistano of Franklin Pierce (SS), and outfielders Nick Campbell of Bryant and Kevin Renaud of Franklin Pierce.
The second team consists of: Bryant's Eric Loh (SP), Eric Polvani (RP) and Pat O'Connor (OF); Caldwell's Robert Casal (SP), Gabriel Molina (3B) and Adric Saxon (OF); Pace University's Dustin Corbett (SP) and Jack Cawley (C); USP's Michael Curry (OF) and Pete LaRocco (DH); C.W. Post's Mike Sylvester (UT); Dominican's Tommy Maloney (1B); Dowling's Brent Lotito (SP); Molloy's T.J. Greig (OF); Philadelphia University's Tyler Mentzer (2B); and Southern Connecticut State's Michael Diaz (SS).
The 2008 Daktronics All-Northeast Region first team includes several that earned major honors from their respective leagues. In addition to Derbacher (Northeast-10 Player of the Year) and Adams (Northeast-10 Co-Pitcher of the Year), Southern Connecticut State pitcher Jim Fuller was named the Northeast-10 Co-Pitcher of the Year along with Adams. Nyack first baseman Cody Levins was named CACC Player of the Year while Molloy College catcher Chris Irwin and Queen's College pitcher Brian Honeyman were named East Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Year respectively. CACC Pitcher of the Year, Robert Casal of Caldwell earned second team all-region honors.
