Baden Player of the Week

Steve Summer, Mercy (Sr., 1B, East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow HS) - Hit .500 (9-18) with three doubles, two home runs, eight RBI and slugged 1.000, collecting 18 total bases, had an OBP of .526, and handled all 49 chances in the field without an error. He hit safely in all five games with three multi-hit performances, and drove in at least one run in four of five outings.  He went a combined 6-for-12 in a three game series with Concordia, including 3-for-3 (3 2B, 3 RBI) in a 5-2 win and added a three-run homer in the finale.


Baden Pitchers of the Week

Bobby Lanigan, Adelphi (Jr., Staten Island, N.Y. / Moore Catholic) - Threw a CG six hit shutout (3-0) striking out 10 against C.W. Post.

Keith Karlsen, CW Post (Sr., Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) - Pitched a three-hit shutout against Molloy (4-0), striking out eight and walking two.

Baden Rookie of the Week

Mitch Rossi, New Haven (Fr., RHP, Bristol, Conn. / Bristol Central) - Held opponents scoreless in four appearances last week, picking up a win and a save in 6 1/3 innings.  He allowed just four hits and struck out eight.

ECC Notebook

ECC: In the most recent NCAA Northeast Regional Top Eight Poll, Molloy was No. 6, Dowling was No. 7 and Saint Thomas Aquinas was No. 8 ... After St. Thomas Aquinas, Dowling and New Haven finished tied atop of the ECC regular season standings, St. Thomas Aquinas emerged from the conference tiebreaking procedures to earn the top seed for the upcoming ECC Baseball Championships this week. New Haven is the No. 2 seed, while Dowling is No. 3. The remainder of the field includes No. 4 C.W. Post, No. 5 Molloy and defending tournament champion and No. 6 seed Adelphi ... After two single elimination games Wednesday, the final four teams advance to Dowling College's Brookhaven campus this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

New Haven: UNH swept a three-game series last weekend from Queens to earn a share of the regular season championship with a 17-10 ECC record.  Evan Okon led the team with a .316 average last week, while Tom Rombilus hit .304 in five games and stole three bases.  Michael Moras had eight RBI's on the week, including seven in a 12-10 win over Queens on Saturday afternoon.  Nick Sperounis was 3-for-7 at the plate in two games (.429).  UNH got two pitching gems on Saturday, with an 8-inning, 10 strikeout shutout by Matt Sommo against Queens.  Dan Blake also had a shutout, pitching a 7-inning complete game against Queens.  Mitch Rossi relieved in four games and did not give up a run, picking up a win and a save for the Chargers.  UNH is seeded second for the upcoming ECC Championships, and will take on the winner of the (3) Dowling vs. (6) Adelphi matchup.  UNH won 2 of 3 from both opponents during the regular season.

Dowling: Dowling had a 5-0 week, extending their overall win streak to 7 and capturing a share of the ECC regular season title.  The title, is the second in the last years for the Golden Lions as they won in previously in 2005.  Dowling heads to the ECC conference championship as the #3 seed and will take on Adelphi Wednesday at 3:30 PM.

C.W. Post: C.W. Post posted 2-3 record last week.  The Pioneers lost close games to Felician and Adelphi before taking two of three from Molloy.  Senior Keith Karlsen pitched his first career shutout against Molloy.  Karlsen gave up three hits and struck out eight batters while walking two against the Lions to close out the regular season.  The Pioneers hope to repeat the performance when they face Molloy at home in the opening round of the ECC tournament on Wednesday. 

Molloy: The Lions went 1-3 for the week with a victory over C.W. Post, while they dropped two games to C.W. Post and one to Dowling.  Joseph Menendez recorded four hits and four RBI, while Andrew Scavuzzo had four hits, three runs scored and an RBI.  Tim Byrne picked up the lone win on the mound for the Lions. 

Adelphi: Adelphi posted a record of 3-1 on the week, picking up the sixth seed in the ECC Playoffs. On the week Adelphi held their opponents to a .198 batting average. Junior Mike Colonna helped the Panthers to a 3-1 record on the week, hitting .500 with five hits in 10 at bats. He scored two runs, drove in one and picked up one stolen base. He also posted a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000 with 10 assists and six put outs. Junior Bobby Lanigan helped kick-off the Panthers three game win streak with a 3-0 shutout of C.W. Post. In the game Lanigan struck out 10 batters while going the distance, allowing just six hits and holding the Pioneers to a .186 batting average. Freshman Keith Couch tossed a complete game in Adelphi's 4-2 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas on May 3. He struck out five Spartan batters and allowed just two hits, holding St. Thomas Aquinas to a .194 batting average.

Bridgeport: UB wrapped up the 2008 season with a 16-18 overall record and a 14-13 on-field East Coast Conference record. Senior Seth Desautel, who led the Purple Knights in batting at .346, had a 14-game hitting streak to end the year. Freshman Peter Barrows led the team in home runs with five and RBIS with 29.

Queens: Queens College rallied twice late in the game to tie Mercy College, 6-6, in 10 innings on Friday afternoon. Catcher Jared Stoler went four for five with a homer and two RBI's for the Knights in a home game played on Mercy's field in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Luis Rojas hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game up for the Knights at 5 apiece. Julian Tosada hit a sac fly give Mercy back the lead in the top of the ninth but QC rallied to knot the game in the bottom half of the inning. Jovan Santos and Joe Pento started the rally with consecutive singles. Santos advanced to third on a fly out to left by Mike Sporton, then scored on a single by Justin McKay to even the score at 6. Jamie Quinn had three hits while McKay and Rojas each had a hit and a RBI for the Knights. Knights' hurlers surrendered just three runs on the day but received no support from their offense in losing 2-0 and 1-0 in Connecticut on Saturday. The Knights could only muster three singles on the day. Mike Sporton led a 15 hit attack with three hits, including a home run, and three RBI's in a 12-10 Knights' loss to New Haven on Sunday in Flushing. Jamie Quinn finished the day with three hits while Justin McKay had two hits and two RBI's in the loss for QC.

Concordia: The Clippers went 2-2 this past week and finished the 2008 baseball season with a 12-inning, 7-6 win over Mercy College. Sophomore T.J. Walsh batted 3-4, including a home run and 2 doubles. Senior Peter Dempsey and junior Matt Shelly each finished with a hit and 2 RBI for the Clippers. Senior Zach Staniewicz collected 2 hits and scored a run. The Clippers conclude the 2008 season with a 14-29 overall record.

Mercy: The Mavericks (11-32-1, 7-17-1 ECC) went 1-3-1 last week to close out the year with the win coming over Concordia in game two of a doubleheader (5-2) and the tie with Queens (6-6, 10 inn). Their 11 victories marks an eight win improvement over the previous season.  Seniors Steve Summer (E. Meadow, NY) and Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) closed out their careers with strong weeks. Summer batted .500, going 9-for-18 with three doubles, two home runs and eight runs batted in.  He finished the year with a team-best 28 RBI. Ross posted a .438 batting average, going 7-for-16 with a double, a home run and four runs batted in. He finished the year with a team-leading .319 batting average. Junior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) also batted .438, collecting a pair of doubles and reaching base at a .526 clip. Freshman Graig Lauricella (N. Massapequa, NY) added a .411 week with his first career round tripper and four runs driven in.  Freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) notched Mercy's victory versus Concordia, tossing a seven-inning complete game three-hitter with five strikeouts, allowing just two runs. The Mavericks are slated to return 25 letter winners from this year's squad in 2009.
