Baden Players of the Week

Kyle Walker, C.W. Post (Jr., 2B, Wantagh, N.Y. / Wantagh) - Hit.455 (10-22), including a home run, three doubles to drive in eight runs, and scored five runs in a 4-2 week. He went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored against Felician. Against Mercy, Walker went 3-for-5, including a home run, with three RBI and two runs scored.

Baden Pitchers of the Week

Mike McLasky, Adelphi (Sr., RP, Ronkonkoma, N.Y. / Suffolk CC) - Appeared in three games and posted a perfect 0.00 ERA with a  2-0 record, including a five inning, two hit, shut out performance in a 13- inning win over Mercy. In all he tossed 9.2 innings of relief, striking out two and holding the opposition to a .094 batting average.

Derek Cotoni, Bridgeport (Jr., LHP, Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) - Was masterful in a 3-0 nine-inning victory over Molloy in game one of a Saturday doubleheader, as he fired a five-hit CG shut out, striking out seven and walking three.

Baden Rookies of the Week

Mike Aviles, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fr. P,  Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) - Threw a complete game three-hit shut-out, striking out 8 in a 7-0 victory over Mercy.

Mitch Rossi, New Haven (Fr., RHP, Bristol, Ct. / Bristol Central H.S.) - Made five scoreless appearances last week, totaling 8 1/3 innings.  He struck out nine while picking up two saves, both in wins over C.W. Post on Saturday.  He limited opponents to just a .185 batting average.

ECC Notebook

ECC: In the most recent NCAA Northeast Regional Top Eight Poll, Molloy was ranked No. 4, Dowling was No. 6 and New Haven was No. 8.

St. Thomas Aquinas: This week the Spartans went 5-1 and got their 25th victory of the season (the most in a regular season since 2003). They also took sole possession of 1st place in the ECC after going 4-0 for the week as they raised their conference record to 15-8. They also defeated Domincan College in a non-conference game. Shortstop, John Mazzello led the Spartans in a 5-1 week, inlcuding a sweep of Mercy to take sole possession of 1st place as he went 10-for-25, scored 7 runs, had 5 RBIs, 4 doubles, a homerun, and 5 stolen bases. He also made several key plays defensively in helping the Spartans win 3 one-run conference games. Jon Della Monica notched 3 saves in 3 appearances. In two conference wins against Concordia and Mercy he threw perfect 9th innings, reiring all 6 batters and striking out 4 batters enroute to preserving 5-4 & 3-2 leads. He also picked up a save against Dominican College. He now has 7 for the season, lowered his ERA to 2.28, and raised his strikeouts to 34 in 27 innings. Mike Aviles threw a complete game, shut-out, striking out 8 batters and allowing only 3 hits in a 7-0 victory over Mercy. The freshman notched his 6th victory of the season (5-1) in the ECC) to lead all freshmen starting pitchers.  Only rookie reliever/ teammate, Mark Fochesato has more victories (7). Mark Fochesato worked 6.1 innings in 4 appearances, allowing only 2 hits and won two conference games picking up his league leading 6th and 7th victories. He lowered his ERA to 1.95. Freshman infielder Dan McDermott continued his hot hitting as he went 9-for-17 and drove in 6 runs with a 2-run homer against Mercy. He also swiped 3 bases.

Molloy: The Lions went 2-3 on the week with a victory over Dowling and Bridgeport.  Molloy dropped a non-conference game to Caldwell and then lost two conference games to Bridgeport.  Pat Walsh had 10 hits, five RBI, six runs scored and was perfect on the base path (4-4).  Chris Irwin added nine hits with four RBI and five runs scored, while Robert LaRusso pitched in with six hits, six RBI and three runs scored.  Michael Mongiardo and Scott Porter picked up the wins on the mound for the Lions. 

C.W. Post: C.W. Post posted a 4-2 record last week, including a 2-0 record at home, to move up to second in the ECC standings.  The Pioneers captured four straight wins before dropping two at New Haven.  Junior second baseman Kyle Walker batted .455 (10-22), including three doubles and a home run to drive in eight runs.  Senior designated hitter Mike Sylvester also tallied 10 hits with a home run, a triple and two doubles.  The Pioneers batted .317 and outscored their opponents by a 36-24 margin. 

New Haven: After opening the week with three losses, including two in ECC play, the Chargers rebounded by winning the weekend series at C.W. Post, sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday.  That puts the Chargers just a half game back of first place in the ECC standings.  Strong pitching performances by Matt Sommo (no hitter through 4 2/3) and Dan Blake (6 2/3 innings of shutout ball) carried UNH on Saturday.  Last week, Adam Rozum hit .533 (8-15) to lead all players, while Michael Moras batted .467 and Jimmy Rivas and Kyle Donnelly drove in a team-leading three runs each.  On the mound, Mitch Rossi picked up two saves and made five scoreless appearances overall, striking out nine in 8 1/3 innings.  With an RBI in Friday's loss at C.W. Post, Moras becomes the UNH baseball program's all-time leader with 160 runs driven in during his four-year career.  He passed Les Wallin (159).  Moras is also third all-time in base hits with 219, just 14 behind the career leader Rob Skinnon.  Moras and the Chargers face a crucial five-game week, including four ECC games that will determine their postseason positioning.

Bridgeport: UB went 3-2 last week to even its season record at 15-15.  On the week, the Purple Knights took two games form ECC co-leader Molloy and posted a home conference win over New Haven. Senior Seth Desautel, who leads the team with a 348 batting average so far in 2008, extended his hitting streak to 10 games with hits in all five games last week.  Seth was a home run short of the cycle versus New Haven on Wednesday, as he went 5-for-6 with three RBI. Junior lefty Derek Cotoni was masterful on Saturday, as he pitched his team's first shut out of the 2008 campaign, as he blanked Molloy over nine innings on Saturday, as he allowed only five hits and fanned seven Lions.  Cotoni is now 4-4 on the year with a tidy 2.48 ERA. Senior Matt Kotuby pitched a complete game win at Molloy on Sunday to raise his season record to an unblemished 4-0. Freshman Peter Barrows leads UB in home runs and RBIs so far this year with five big flys and 27 runs batted in. This week, the Purple Knights host New Haven on Tuesday and play a three-game ECC weekend series with Dowling to close out regular season conference play.

Adelphi: Adelphi is on a tear as of late, winning eight of their last 11 games, including posting five straight wins a one point. Senior Rob DeGennaro helped Adelphi to a 3-2 record on the week, posting a batting average of .438 (7-16). He started three games and appreared in four, scoring five runs and driving in three, while slugging .500 and collecting a .438 on base percentage. Senior Mike McLasky appeared in three games last week and posted a perfect ERA of 0.00 with a record of 2-0, including a five inning, two hit, shut out performance in Adelphi's 13 inning win over Mercy on April 27. In all McLasky tossed 9.2 innings of relief, striking out two and holding the opposition to a .094 batting average.

Queens: Jovan Santos went five for six with three runs batted in to lead Queens College to a 10-5 win at Mercy College on Wednesday afternoon in Dobbs Ferry. David Kupec picked up the win with two innings of spotless, three strike out relief while Brian Honeyman earned the save by throwing two scoreless innings with three punch outs as well. Justin McKay also had a hit and two RBI's for the Knights ... Brian Honeyman pitched the Knights to a 1-0, nightcap win over Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon in Flushing. Honeyman pitched a three hit shutout and struck out seven in recording a 1-0 win for Queens College. Ed Hackimer walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to push across the winning run for the Knights ... Justin McKay hit .412 in four games for QC, including a ninth inning, game tying home run against Adelphi on Sunday in a 6-5, 13 inning loss.

Concordia: The Clippers went 1-4 this past week. Concordia started out with a 8-0 loss to Dowling and a 5-4 loss to STAC during the week, Concordia bounced back in game one of a doubleheader at home against Dowling 8-3 and lost the second game 9-3. The Clippers lost the series finale to Dowling 5-0. Sophomore T.J. Walsh batted .375 (6-16) for the week senior Peter Dempsey went .316 (6-19). Senior Tom Bordanaro hit 5 RBI during the week. Concordia will host Caldwell on Monday and STAC on Tuesday before wrapping up the week at Mercy for a Saturday doubleheader and hosting the Mavericks on Sunday.

Mercy: The Mavericks (10-29, 6-17 ECC) dropped six games last week, five in ECC play. Freshman Mike Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) made the most of his time, going 4-for-9 (.444) in five games. Freshman Graig Lauricella (N. Massapequa, NY) batted .385 for the week, going 5-for-13 with four stolen bases and two runs batted in.  Mercy got a pair of strong performances in two 3-2 defeats to St. Thomas Aquinas over the weekend.  In game one, freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) went the distance, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight. In the final game of the series, junior Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) tossed another complete game. He worked around trouble to strand 16 Spartans on base, striking out seven along the way. Moreno leads the pitching staff with a 3.12 ERA, striking out 44 batters in 43.1 innings pitched.  Walsh carries a 3.76 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 26.1 innings of work.  Walsh is also second on the squad with a .296 batting average and has a team-best 18 stolen bases in 21 attempts. Senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) continues to lead the offense with a .303 batting average. The Mavericks will wrap up the 2008 season with six games this week. After an ECC game at Queens on Tuesday, they will play non-conference games versus Briarcliffe on Wednesday and UMass Lowell on Friday, before a three game league set with Concordia on Saturday and Sunday.
