Baden Players of the Week
Vin Malzahn, St. Thomas Aquinas (So., 1B, Port Jervis, N.Y. / Port Jervis) - In a 4-1 week as a DH (recovering from injury), went 9-for-19 (.473) with 7 RBI, four runs scored, two doubles, a triple, and a home run.
Chris Irwin, Molloy (Sr., C, Mahopac, N.Y. /
Mahopac) - Hit .438 with 7 hits (2 2B, 3B), 6 runs scored, seven
RBI and slugged .688 in a 3-2 week. Had a hit and RBI in an 8-4
loss to Dowling. In a 9-1 win over Briarcliffe, was 1-1 (2 RBI, R).
Had a hit (2 RBI, R) in a 4-3 win over Queens. In a 13-5 win over
Queens, he was 3-4 (2 RBI, 3 R).
Baden Pitcher of the Week
Matt Kotuby, Bridgeport (Sr., P, East Hampton,
Conn. / East Hampton) - Went 2-0 pitching 15.2 innings, allowing
four earned runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts. He topped New
Haven on the road (6-2) going eight innings (2 R, 6 H). Topped
Concordia at home (4-3) going 7 2/3 innings (2 ER, 6 H, 4 K).
Anthony Russo, St. Thomas Aquinas (Sr., P,
Brooklyn, N.Y. / St. Edmunds) - Made two conference starts,
allowing one earned run over 13 1/3 innings (6 H, 2 BB) and went
1-0. Against Concordia he tossed 8 innings (3H, 0 ER, 3 K, BB) in a
7-1 win. Against New Haven he went 5 1/3 (no decision) allowing 3
hits (ER, BB, K).
Baden Rookie of the Week
Tom Rombilus, New Haven (Fr., OF, Monroe, Conn. / Masuk) - Hit .381 (8-21, 2B, SB) with four RBI and five runs along with an on base percentage of .458.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In the most recent NCAA Northeast Regional Top Eight Poll, Molloy was ranked No. 4, Dowling was No. 6 and New Haven was No. 8.
Molloy: The Lions were 3-2 this week as they
defeated Briarcliffe College on April 16 and took two games from
Queens. Molloy dropped a game to Queens and Dowling.
Brian Powers picked up two of the wins on the mound this week,
while Michael Maddi had the third win. Chris Irwin knocked in
seven runs on seven hits (.438) with six runs scored.
New Haven: The Chargers lost an ECC series for the
first time this season over the weekend vs. STAC, winning just the
second game. UNH was 2-3 overall last week, but still has a
share of the ECC lead with a 12-7 conference record. Jimmy
Rivas is now leading the team in batting with a .386 average,
getting enough recent at-bats to pull himself above the season
minimum of 3.0 plate appearances per team game. He is also
tied for second on the team with 20 RBI and three homers.
Michael Moras leads the team with 22 RBI, while Chad Lemos is next
along with Rivas at 20. On the pitching side, T.J. Phelan has
a 5-2 record while freshman Mike Aquilino is 4-1 with a
team-leading 2.92 ERA in 40 innings. In the crowded ECC
field, UNH and Molloy are tied at 12-7 with just a half-game lead
over C.W. Post, the Chargers' weekend opponent April 25-26.
UNH also plays Bridgeport on Wednesday, a team just two games back
of the ECC lead but only in the sixth playoff position.
Dowling: The Golden Lions went 3-5 on the week
to post a 20-14 overall and 11-8 in conference action.
Dowling picked up back to back conference wins against Molloy, 8-4,
and Mercy, 19-1. Gabe Duran pitched six innings in the
victory over Mercy to record the win from inside the circle where
he fanned a career high and eleven batters on the day.
Dowling traveled to C.W. Post where they fell two games, 0-2, and
3-4 before ending the week at home to close out the three-game
series. Senior, Rich Barry, scattered five hits for a
complete game shut-out as the Golden Lions defeated the Pioneers,
6-0.
St. Thomas Aquinas: The Spartans notched their
20th victory of the season after their 12-4 victory over New Haven
and raised their conference record to 11-8, only game out of 1st
place. They went 4-1 in the ECC this week with victories over
Concordia (7-1), Bridgeport (6-4), New Haven (10-2), and New Haven
again (12-4). Of the Spartans 11 conference victories they have
scored in double figures in 7 of them.
Bridgeport: The Purple Knights head into this
week's play with a 12-13 overall record and a 10-9 mark in ECC
play. Three players are hitting .300 or better for UB so far this
season, Mike Ferrara (.356), Seth Desautel (.323) and Peter Barrows
(.302). Barrows leads the team in home runs and RBI so far this
year with five homers and 24 RBI. Matt Kotuby went 2-0 on the mound
last week for Bridgeport. Matt is 3-0 so far this year with a
team-best 2.05 ERA. Paul Ruiz-Rodriguez picked up his first save of
2008 on Sunday, as he finished off a 4-3 home win over Concordia
with 1.1 innings of hitless and scoreless ball. This week, the
Purple Knights play a none-conference game at Post University on
Tuesday, host New haven on Wednesday and play an ECC weekend series
with Molloy.
Adelphi: Adelphi improved to 17-20 overall thanks to a 4-1 record this past week. The Panthers bats came alive as they hit .314 for the week and the pitching staff compiled an ERA of 2.09 with 38 strike outs in five games. Junior Rob Paccione helped Adelphi to a 4-1 week, including three conference wins. He hit .476 (10-21) with eight runs scored, two RBI and two doubles. Paccione also stole two bases and was flawless in the field with five put outs in addition to posting a .500 on base percentage. Sophomore Mike Scudero tossed seven shutout innings the second game of Adelphi's doubleheader with Mercy on April 19. In his complete game victory Scudero struck out eight, gave up just two hits and held Mercy to a .091 batting average.
Queens: Jamie Quinn and Jovan Santos each had three hits but Mercy College nipped the Knights, 8-7, in Dobbs Ferry, New York on Tuesday afternoon. Shortstop Ed Hackimer also had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for QC ... The Knights tried to rally but couldn't overcome a 3-0, first inning deficit in a 4-2 loss to Molloy College on Friday in Rockville Centre, NY. Starter Brian Friedman recovered from a shaky three run first inning to pitch five scoreless innings, striking out five. Mike Sporton, Quinn and Santos all had two hits on the day for QC ... Brian Honeyman improved to 5-0 with a complete game, 5-2 victory in game two of a doubleheader split with Molloy College on Saturday in Flushing. QC scored four in the third to give Brian Honeyman all of the offense he would need in a 5-2 win in the nightcap. Santos singled Ed Hackimer in with the first run and Justin Mckay singled in Santos to make it 2-0. Mike Sporton then ended the outburst with a two run home run. Honeyman went the distance, striking out six while giving up seven hits to improve to 5-0 in 2008. Suarez, Sciretta, Santos and Joe Pento all had two hits for the Knights their 13-5, game one loss.
Mercy: The Mavericks (10-23, 6-12 ECC) went 1-5 last week. Mercy's victory came against ECC foe Queens College on Tuesday, an 8-7 decision at home. Freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) batted .385 for the week with a double and three runs scored. Senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) added a .357 week and junior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) batted .333 with his first home run as a Maverick. That trio makes up Mercy's three top hitters on the year. Ross leads the squad at .324 with Walsh at .310 and Pannullo at .281. The Mavericks got a couple of strong pitching performances last week. In a 4-0 loss to Adelphi, freshman Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) allowed three earned runs on six hits in six innings. Junior southpaw Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) took a tough loss in a 2-1 decision at Adelphi on Sunday. Merslich scattered seven hits over 7.2 innings, allowed just one earned run and struck out five. Marsar continues to lead the staff with a 4-3 record and a 3.20 ERA. The Mavericks will play six games in six days for the second straight week. After a non-conference game at Ramapo on Tuesday, they will host Queens (Wed.), C.W. Post (Thurs.), and St. Thomas Aquinas (DH-Sat.), before visiting the Spartans for a single game (Sun.)
Concordia: The Clippers went 3-2 this past week with a non-conference 15-1 win over Briarcliffe and a doubleheader sweep of Bridgeport on Saturday 3-1 and 4-3. The Clippers lost to STAC on Tuesday 7-1 and lost at Bridgeport on Sunday 4-3. Sophomore T.J. Walsh had 5 hits, an RBI and scored 2 runs in the 3 games against Bridgeport. The Clippers will travel to Dowling in a non-conference game on Tuesday and travel to STAC on Wednesday before hosting the Golden Lions on Saturday for a doubleheader. The Clippers will wrap up the week at Dowling on Sunday.
