Baden Player of the Week
Chris Irwin, Molloy (Sr., C, Mahopac, N.Y. / Mahopac HS) - Guided the Lions to a 3-1 week hitting .417 with two home runs, six RBI, three runs scored, slugged .917 and was 3 for 3 in stolen base attempts. In a 13-8 loss to Adelphi, recorded two RBI, a homerun and a run score. Knocked in a run in a 4-0 win over Dominican. In a 10-3 victory over Concordia, had an RBI and a run scored. In a 7-1 victory over Concordia, he was 3-4, with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.
Baden Pitchers of the Week
Brian Honeyman, Queens (Sr., Pitcher, Flushing, N.Y. / Molloy) - Was 1-0 with one save and a 0.00 era in a 2-2 week. He picked up the save on Tuesday against C.W. Post (1 IP, 0 H, 1 K). On Saturday, pitched a seven inning four-hit CG, striking out 10 with no earned runs in a 4-2 win over St. Thomas Aquinas.
Baden Rookie of the Week
Tom Rombilus, New Haven (Fr., 3B, Monroe, Conn. / Masuk H.S.) - Hit .533 (8-15) with four runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base in four games. He had two three-hit performances in ECC play, against Concordia and at Dowling.
ECC Notebook
ECC: In this week's NCBWA Northeast Regional
Poll, Adelphi remains No. 5, Molloy moves up two spots to No. 6,
Dowling drops one spot to No. 7, while St. Thomas Aquinas, New
Haven and Bridgeport are receiving votes.
New Haven: UNH won three of four games in ECC play
last week, including a season series win over Dowling on the
weekend. The Chargers, who started the season on a 0-8 skid,
have since won 12 of their last 17 and eight of 11 in ECC
play. Last week, Tom Rombilus powered the offense, hitting
.533 (8-for-15) to set the table, scoring a team-best four runs
while driving in a pair. Previously seldom-used, Adam Rozum
started all four games last week and hit .429 (6-14), while Michael
Moras hit .417 (5-12) with a pair of doubles. On the pitching
side, things continue to look up for UNH as the team posted a 2.18
ERA last week. UNH got shutout performances from a trio of
starters, including Dan Blake and T.J. Phelan (both 7 innings) as
well as Mike Aquilino (6 1/3). Aquilino, a freshman, leads
the club with three victories, tied with frosh reliever Mitch Rossi
(3 wins, 1 save). Chad Lemos had his team-leading fourth
homer last week.
Molloy: The Lions went 3-1 for the week with two conference victories over Concordia College on April 5 and a non-conference victory over Dominican on April 2. Their lone loss of the week came on April 1 against Adelphi. Eric Williams, Steven DeJesus and Tim Byrne all picked up wins on the mound. Chris Irwin recorded five hits, which included two homeruns, six RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases, while Andrew Scavuzzo had seven hits, which included three doubles, four RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
St. Thomas Aquinas: The Spartans entered the week ranked 11th in the NCBWA Region Poll and leading the ECC in ERA (3.26) and stolen bases (68). In a rain-limited week they went 2-2 with a pair of ECC victories over Queens in which they scored 33 runs. . In four games, Kevin Connors went 7-for-10, with 7 RBI, 4 Doubles, 4 Runs, and 2-for-2 in stolen bases. The sophomore infielder had a slugging percentage of 1.10. He came up three times with bases loaded and went 3-for-3, hitting 2 doubles and a single, driving in 7 runs with three swings of the bat. Senior shortstop John Mazzello continued to be the spark plug for the Spartan's offense going 7-for-16 with 4 RBIs, 4 runs, and 2 stolen bases. Freshman, Dan McDermott leads the Spartan hitters with a .354 average and 21 RBIs. Coming off a week long stint on the DL, sophomore Vin Malzahn slugged his 4th homerun and drove in his 20th RBI. Freshman pitcher Mark Fochesato won his 4th game and extended his streak of innings without an earned run to 16 with a 6-inning shutout over Queens. Reliever Jon Della Monica has now thrown 18 innings with 21 Ks and surrendered only one earned run.
Dowling: The Golden Lions went 1-2 on the week
in ECC action against New Haven to post a 14-11 overall record and
a 5-5 conference mark. Dave Wendt went 3 for six at the plate
smacking an RBI single to break open the score in game one en route
to a 6-2 win. ECC Pitcher of the Week, Brent Lotito held strong
from the mound pitching a complete game striking out two to tally
his fifth win of the season (5-1). Dowling fought to stay alive in
game three fighting back from a four run deficit to rally late in
the top of the eighth. Scoring three runs off of three hits the
Golden Lions were able to inch to within one of New Haven but fell
up short in the 4-3 loss. Dowling travels to Mercy College this
Wednesday, April 9th to resume conference play.
CW Post: The Pioneers recorded a 2-1 week, notching a sweep of Mercy College on Sunday, April 6, to earn two ECC victories and even up their conference record at 5-5. Brothers Pete and Bo Budkevics earned wins for the Pioneers with Bo throwing a complete game shutout in the nightcap against Mercy. Anthony Rinaldi had a dominant week in relief, striking out four the five batters he faced on the week and earning his first save of the season against Mercy. Steve Algarroba was the big hitter for the Pioneers, batting .500 with three RBI on the week. C.W. Post will play at St. Thomas Aquinas on Apr. 8 at 3 p.m. and will next host Concordia College on Apr. 13 at 1 p.m.
Adelphi: Adelphi posted an even record of 2-2 on the week and had six players hit .300 or better on the week, including two players hitting .400 or better. Graduate student Pat O'Neill helped even to a record of 2-2 on the week, hitting .538. He scored three runs, drove in two and posted a slugging percentage of .615 and an on-base percentage of .571 on the week.
Bridgeport: The Purple Knights went 2-0 last week winning a pair of games over Adelphi, 12-1, on Long Island on Saturday and taking a 14-inning, 3-2 win in West Haven, CT on Sunday. Sunday was scheduled to be a doubleheader but game two was not played due to darkness. A make-up date will be announce at a later time. UB enters this week's play with a 6-9 overall record and a 4-5 ECC mark. In the 14-inning win on Sunday, the Bridgeport bullpen allowed only one run in nine innings pitched. Through 15 games played, Brett Thornton, who drove in the game-winning run on Sunday, leads the team in batting average at .367. Mike Ferrara is second in batting with a .345 average and Seth Desautel, who hit, 400 last week, is third in batting with a .327 average. Thornton, Desautel and Peter Barrows are tied for the team lead in runs batted in, as they each have 13 RBI. Matt Kotuby leads the Purple Knights in E.R.A. at 3.00 in five appearance, and Doug Wenz is 2-0 with a 3.54 E.R.A. Derek Cotoni, who pitched a six-hit complete game win on Saturday, is 2-3 with s 3.83 E.R.A. Cotoni leads UB in innings pitched with 40.0 and strike outs with 33.
Mercy: The Mavericks (8-15, 4-5 ECC) fell in
both ends of a doubleheader at C.W. Post on Sunday, dropping the
opener 3-1 and game two by a score of 2-0. Senior third
baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) led the Mercy offense with three
hits on the day. Junior right fielder Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills,
NY) had an RBI single in the first game. Ross currently has a
nine-game hitting streak in which he's batting .469 (15-for-32) to
raise his season average to .316. Matt Walsh (Staten Island,
NY) had his team best 12-game hitting streak snapped in game two on
Sunday. He leads the Mavericks with a .322 batting average this
year. Senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) continues to lead the
squad with 16 runs batted in. Freshman Steve Marsar (Seaford,
NY) turned in another strong performance on the mound in game two,
tossing 6.1 innings without allowing an earned run on only three
hits. Marsar lowered his team-best earned run average to 1.67.
Opponents are batting only .195 against him. The Mavericks
are slated to host Dowling on Wednesday, travel to UMass Lowell on
Friday, and close out the week with a three-game series versus
Molloy.
Concordia: The Clippers finished the week 1-3.
Concordia opened with a 10-0 loss at New Haven, followed by a 2-0
non-conference win against STAC on Thursday. The Clippers ended the
week with a doubleheader loss to Molloy on Sunday 10-3 and 7-1.
Senior Tom Bordanaro collected 3 hits, including a double and a
triple, scored a run and batted in a run. Sophomore Donnie Roth had
2 doubles this week. Senior Peter Dempsey finished with 3 hits this
past week. The Clippers will host Molloy on Monday in the third
game of the series and will also host New Haven on Wednesday.
Concordia will then travel to STAC for a single game on Thursday
before hosting CW Post on Saturday for a doubleheader and at CW
Post on Sunday.
