ECC Indoor Track and Field Report - Week Four

Men's Track Athlete of the Week

Vincent Ohenhen, Staten Island
Senior | Staten Island, NY

In a 200m race filled with Division I, II, and III runners, Ohenhen won his heat to place second overall in a field of 77 at the NYC Gotham Cup on Saturday. His collegiate-best time of 21.85 earned him the top Division II time of the race, finishing just .09 off from Division I St. Peter’s Delano Gooden, tops both the ECC and NCAA East Region, and sits just .22 off from the NCAA provisional standard.


Men's Field Athlete of the Week

Austin Melvin, Roberts Wesleyan
Freshman | Pole Vault | Central Square, NY

Melvin vaulted his way to a first-place finish with a school-record performance at the Brockport Friday Night Rust Buster. The RWU freshman jumped into the competition at 15' 1" and cleared that bar on his first attempt to tie his PR. He then cleared the next four heights with one jump each before his first miss of the night at 5.06m (16' 7 1/4”). Melvin hit his second attempt for his final result and a new school record for indoor pole vault at Roberts Wesleyan to claim the win in the field of 34. Surpassing the NCAA Division II provisional standard by .28m, Melvin’s jump tops both the ECC and NCAA East Region and ranks sixth nationally as the top freshman mark in Division II. 


Women's Track Athlete of the Week

Ocelia Jones, Holy Family
Sophomore | Hurdles | Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica

Jones turned in three ECC-leading performances at the NYC Gotham Cup on Friday. The Holy Family sophomore placed second in the 60m hurdles in a field of 44 with a collegiate PR of 9.01, which tops the ECC and ranks third in the NCAA East Region. She also placed seventh in a 400m field of 49 with another collegiate- PR of 59.30, which tops the ECC and ranks fourth in the NCAA East Region. Jones then anchored the 4x400m relay that crossed in an ECC- and NCAA East Region-leading 4:00.75. 


Women's Field Athlete of the Week

Brynn King, Roberts Wesleyan
Graduate Student | Pole Vault | The Woodlands, TX

King ran her streak of wins to 18 consecutive meets against collegiate competition with a top-place finish in every meet since arriving at Roberts Wesleyan, the latest coming in the form of a pole vault victory at the Brockport Friday Night Rust Buster. The RWU graduate student easily cleared the NCAA provisional standard with a mark of 4.30m (14’ 1 1/4”) to win the event on her first attempt and passed on to the 15' bar before bowing out of the competition with three misses at 15' 1 1/4”. 


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Men's
Robbie Babson, Georgian Court
Senior | Toms River, NJ

Babson turned in a pair of top-five finishes at the NYC Gotham Cup on Friday. The GCU senior placed second in a field of 35 - and was the top Division II finisher - in the shot put with a throw of 16.48m (54’ 1”); that mark surpasses the NCAA provisional standard by .08m and tops the ECC, ranks third in the NCAA East Region, and ties for 24th nationally. Babson also placed fourth in a field of 31 in the weight throw with a toss of 15.50m (50’ 10 1/4”), which ranks fourth in the ECC and eight in the NCAA East Region. 

Jayden Bennermon, St. Thomas Aquinas
Senior | Jumps | Poughkeepsie, NY

Bennermon won the triple jump in a field of 23 with a school-record mark of 14.45m to move into fourth in the ECC in the event. He also placed fifth in the high jump (1.92m, field of 14) at the Ramapo College Season Opener on Friday.

Shane Connell, Felician
Senior | Jumps | East Rutherford, NJ

Connell placed second in the high jump field of 14 at the Ramapo College Season Opener, posting a season-best mark of 2.02m. That performance ranks third in the ECC and fourth in the NCAA East Region. 

Isaiah Davenport, Holy Family
Sophomore | Jumps | Pleasantville, NJ

Davenport earned silver in a field of 22 in the high jump at the NYC Gotham Cup on Friday, finishing only behind teammate Nishorn Pierre as he cleared an NCAA provisional mark of 2.04m. 

Emmanuel Mena Jimenez, St. Thomas Aquinas
Graduate Student | Throws | West Haverstraw, NY

Mena Jimenez placed second in the weight throw (19.59m, field of 16) and third in the shot put (season-best 15.39m, field of 16) at the Ramapo College Season Opener on Friday. The STAC graduate student continues to hold NCAA Division II provisional standard in the weight throw while his new season-best mark in the shot put ranks second in the ECC and fifth in the NCAA East Region. 

Ryan Pettrow, Georgian Court
Sophomore | Jackson, NJ

Pettrow set a personal-best time in the 1000m at the NYC Gotham Cup as the GCU sophomore finished 13th overall in 2:35.34. That performance tops the ECC this season and moves him into fourth all-time at Georgian Court.

Nishorn Pierre, Holy Family
Senior | Jumps | Grenada

Pierre won the high jump at the NYC Gotham Cup on Friday, clearing an NCAA provisional mark of 2.04m to top the field of 22. He also placed sixth out of 47 in the long jump with a distance of 6.84m.

John Ray, Queens
Senior | Distance | Bellerose, NY

Competing in the Ramapo Season Opener on Friday, Ray recorded a new career-best 3000m time of 8:56.59 to place eighth overall. That time leads the ECC. 

Odane Smith, Holy Family
Sophomore | Jumps | Saint Catherine, Jamaica

Smith earned silver in the triple jump in a field of 23 at the NYC Gotham Cup on Friday, landing at an NCAA provisional mark of 14.61m.

Owen White, Roberts Wesleyan
Graduate Student | Distance | Lockport, NY

In the featured mile heat at the Brockport Friday Night Rust Buster, White crossed the finish line in 4:18.51, good for third in a field of 58 runners. The time was just 1.5 seconds off of his PR that was set at the same meet a year ago. Converted to a 4:15.26, that time tops both the ECC and NCAA East Region.

Kayla Cooper, District of Columbia
Junior | Brooklyn, NY

Cooper recorded two ECC bests at the HBCU Classic, placing 21st out of 92 in the 200m (25.64, fifth in NCAA East Region) and second out of 28 in the long jump (5.61m, fifth in NCAA East Region). 

Kaydence Fischer, Georgian Court
Sophomore | Brick, NJ

Fischer’s shot put mark of 11.23m (36’ 10 1/4”), posted at the NYC Gotham Cup, ranks third in the ECC this season.

Imani Fitzpatrick, Felician
Junior | Sprints | Neptune, NJ

Fitzpatrick placed third in a field of 46 in the 400m at the Ramapo College Season Opener, clocking a 59.54. That time ranks third in the ECC. 

Emmanuela Katou Kouami, District of Columbia
Junior | Bronx, NY

Kouami placed sixth in a field of 21 in the weight throw at the HBCU Classic with another school-record mark of 15.40m. This is the best mark recorded in the ECC to date and ties for first in the East Region. This mark was also the best Division II mark at the meet.

Kylee Odell, Roberts Wesleyan
Graduate Student | Middle Distance | Panama, NY 

In her first meet after the holiday break, Odell won the mile at the Brockport Friday Night Rust Buster. Odell ran in the featured heat of the race and led a 1-2-3 finish for the Redhawks with her winning time of 5:17.85 in the field of 29. 

Lainie Smith, D’Youville
Junior | Distance | Lancaster, NY

Smith cruised to a new PR time in the 3000m at the Al Campbell Invitational on Friday, crossing in 10:16.12 for second in a field of 24 racers. That time tops the ECC and ranks third in the NCAA East Region. 

Sydonia Turner, Holy Family
Junior | High Jump | Philadelphia, PA

Turner moved into a tie for second in the ECC, as she cleared 1.60m in the high jump to place seventh out of 25 at the NYC Gotham Cup on Friday. She was also 13th out of 37 in the long jump with a distance of 5.01m.
