ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Roberts Wesleyan University's Brynn King finished seventh in the women's pole vault at the USA Track and Field (USATF) Indoor Nationals on Saturday.
King, a fifth-year student from The Woodlands, Texas, was competing at nationals for the first time.
"It was a good experience," said King, who was the only college student in the field of 12. "I was really nervous and it was really good to be in this environment and to see what it is like to compete at this level."
King made her first two jumps at 4.25 meters and 4.4 meters. She missed on her first two tries at 4.5 meters (14-feet, 9-inches) before making a clutch jump to remain in the competition.
King, who holds the NCAA Division II record of 4.61 meters (15-1 ½), made three attempts at 4.65 meters (15-3), but was not successful. She was one of three competitors to clear 4.5 meters, but Kristen Leland and Emily Grove tied for fifth based on fewer misses. Katie Moon, who cleared 4.8 meters (15-9) won the event.
King, who has set the NCAA Division II record seven times this season, is a transfer from Duke University. She has already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June and plans to next compete at the NCAA Division II Nationals on March 8 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
"I think that this experience will do a lot for me," King said. "It was good to compete against these girls and it was good to be in a competition where other people jump so high and show me what I have to work for to get where I want to be."
