STATEN ISLAND, NY - In yesterday's weekly address to the College of Staten Island faculty and staff, CSI President Dr. Timothy G. Lynch announced the appointment of Matthew Scally as the new Director of Athletics, Intramurals & Recreation.  The appointment comes at the conclusion of a search which began earlier this year following the departure of then Director of Athletics Chase Licata.  In the aftermath of Licata's departure for a new role at Columbia University, Director of Athletics for NCAA Compliance Brian Guidera was named Interim Director of Athletics.  Guidera has served in that position for the past several months and will return to his previous role when Scally begins his appointment on January 2, 2025.

In his address to the campus community, President Lynch thanked Guidera for his service in his interim role and expressed his excitement for the arrival of Scally.  Joining CSI by way of Columbia University, Scally brings with him over 30 years of experience working in collegiate administration.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Administration from St. John's University in 1991 and completed his master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from Long Island University - Brooklyn in 1997.

Immediately following his 1991 graduation from St. John's, Scally took on his first role at LIU-Brooklyn as Assistant Director of Admissions.  Following a move to the College of Pharmacy as its Director of Advisement, he joined Athletics in 1999.  During his time overseeing the Academic and Compliance areas at LIU-Brooklyn, the Blackbirds posted a GPA above 3.00 in each semester.  They also had more than 50 teams receive accolades for academic excellence, and the program garnered national recognition for having the highest student-athlete graduation rate compared to the general student body.  During his tenure as part of the senior staff at LIU-Brooklyn, the Blackbirds won over 40 Northeast Conference (NEC) championships and boasted dozens of major award-winners within the NEC.  In addition to their success in intercollegiate athletic competition, the program also had multiple student-athletes named university valedictorian.
