ECC Women's Tennis Report - Week Five

 

Player and Rookie of the Week

Anaya Brons, St. Thomas Aquinas
Freshman | Utrecht, Netherlands

Brons went 4-0 in STAC’s pair of 7-0 victories over ECC opponents D’Youville on Friday and Daemen on Saturday. The STAC freshman teamed up with Kathryn Kryuchkova at No. 2 doubles to defeat D’Youville’s Maria Campisi and Paola Ermina, 6-0, and Daemen’s Kitsa Scime and Yinett Del Leon, 6-2. At No. 1 singles, the rookie held her own with a 7-6 (7), 6-1 win over D’Youville’s Mina Randjelovic and a 6-1, 6-0 win over Daemen’s Frida Rubio. 


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Kyra Bergmann, Queens
Senior | Forest Hills, NY

Bergmann went 4-0 in Queens’ pair of victories over ECC opponents Daemen on Friday and D’Youville on Saturday. With teammate Regina Ruiz, Bergmann opened the week with a No. 2 doubles victory over Daemen’s Kitsa Scime and Yinett Del Leon, 6-3. The QC senior followed up with a No. 3 singles victory over Del Leon, 6-2, 6-3. Against D’Youville, Bergmann teamed up with Sakura Santo to earn a No. 2 doubles victory over Maria Campisi and Paola Ermina, 6-0. Promoted to No. 2 singles, she then took home a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Yuliia Kashtelian to close an undefeated 4-0 weekend. 

Caroline Hany-Fawzy, Queens
Senior | Alexandria, Egypt

Hany-Fawzy went 2-0 in ECC singles match-ups this weekend, earning a No. 2 victory over Daemen’s Kitsa Scime, 6-2, 6-0, and a No. 3 victory over D’Youville’s Maria Campisi, 6-0, 6-1.

Desire Parn, District of Columbia
Freshman | Parnu, Estonia

Parn went 3-1 in a 2-0 week for the Firebirds at No. 1 singles and doubles. In the Firebirds’ win over Molloy, the UDC freshman teamed up with Polina Zelentsova for a 6-3 win. In the Firebirds’ 7-0 win over Dominican, Parn teamed up with Zelentsova to defeat Dominican and went on to take down Lia Sarjveladze, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0(8).

Sakura Saito, Queens
Freshman | Chiba, Japan

Saito went 2-0 in ECC doubles play this weekend. Against Daemen on Friday, Santo teamed up with Lydia Zafeiri to defeat Carly Armitage and Stephanie Baier at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (7-3). Promoted to No. 2 doubles against D’Youville on Saturday, Saito and partner Kyra Bergmann earned a 6-0 victory over Maria Campisi and Paola Ermina. 

Lydia Zafeiri, Queens
Junior | Athens, Greece

Zafeiri went 3-0 on the weekend with one doubles victory and two singles wins. Against Daemen on Friday, Zafeiri earned a No. 3 doubles victory with teammate Sakura Santo, taking down Daemen’s Carly Armitage and Stephanie Baier, 7-6 (7-3). She went on to defeat Baier at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-1. Promoted to No. 5 singles against D’Youville on Saturday, Zafeiri earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Yeli Prokopenko to complete her 3-0 weekend. 

Polina Zelentsova, District of Columbia
Sophomore | Chaiky, Ukraine

Zelentsova went 4-0 in a 2-0 week for UDC. In the 6-1 win over Molloy, Zelentsova teamed up with Desire Parn for a 6-3 win over Erin Sanchez and Elena Baughman-Saunders at No. 1 doubles. She then went on to defeat Sanchez, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. In the Firebirds 7-0 non-conference win over Dominican, Zelentsova once again teamed up with Parn to defeat Dominican's Lia Sarjveladze and Ava O'Brien, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles before going on to blank Kyla Fouts at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
