Queens Claims Top Seed for This Weekend's ECC Women's Tennis Championship

COLONIA, NJ – For the fourth consecutive year, Queens, St. Thomas Aquinas, District of Columbia, and Daemen will battle in this year's version of the East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship that begins on Friday morning, October 25. The winner of the tournament will receive the ECC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Championship.

Queens, St. Thomas Aquinas, and District of Columbia all went 4-1 during the ECC slate to share the regular season title, marking the first time in conference history in which three teams have tied for the best ECC regular season record.

Queens College will once again serve as tournament host at its on-campus tennis center in Flushing, NY. First-serve comes on Friday, October 25 with two semifinal matchups. The winners will advance to the championship match on Saturday, October 26.

No. 1 seed Queens (4-1, 4-1 ECC) won at last a share of the conference's regular season championship for the second straight year after claiming sole possession of it last season. The Knights have won the ECC Championship nine times and have advanced to the final of the tournament in 20 of the past 21 seasons.

Making their fifth consecutive ECC Championship appearance, No. 4 seed Daemen (9-4, 2-3 ECC) will see Queens in Friday afternoon's semifinal.

The Knights and Wildcats met at Queens on October 4, when QC earned a 6-1 victory at home with singles wins at No. 2 (Caroline Hany-Fawzy), No. 3 (Kyra Bergmann), No. 4 (Regina Ruiz), No. 5 (Kayla Taszymowicz), and No. 6 (Lydia Zafeiri); Daemen's Frida Rubio took down ECC Preseason Player of the Year Maja Makal in the No. 1 match. The Knights swept for the doubles point, led by No. 1 Makal/Saga Berggren and No. 2 Bergmann/Ruiz. 

Defending ECC Champion St. Thomas Aquinas is the No. 2 seed, entering tournament play with a record of 6-1 (4-1 ECC). The Spartans have won the last two ECC Championship titles over Queens, 4-0 in 2022 and 4-1 in 2023.

Facing St. Thomas Aquinas in Friday morning's semifinal will be No. 3 seed District of Columbia (6-2, 4-1 ECC). The Firebirds have won a pair of ECC Championship crowns, with the latest coming in 2021. 

The Spartans and Firebirds met on October 11, when STAC earned a 6-1 victory on the road with singles wins at No. 1 (Anaya Brons), No. 3 (Elise Semmartin), No. 4 (Courtney Fyvie), No. 5 (Ombeline Robilliart), and No. 6 (Kateryna Kryuchkova); UDC's Polina Zelentsova took the win at No. 2. The doubles point came down to No. 1 court; STAC's Semmartin/Mar Caneves Bufi won at No. 3 and UDC's Celia Bastin/Claudia Bahamon Lopez won at No. 2 before STAC's Fyvie/Silins secured the point at No. 1.
