ECC Women's Tennis Report - Week Six

 

Player of the Week

Polina Zelentsova, District of Columbia
Sophomore | Chaiky, Ukraine

Zelenstova went 2-0 singles play at No. 2 and 1-1 in doubles play at No. 1 to split the week. In the Firebirds’ loss to STAC, she picked up the only singles victory by defeating Elita Silins 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. In UDC's 4-3 victory over Queens, she teamed up with Desire Parn to defeat Maja Makal and Saga Berggren, 6-4, before going on to defeat the ECC Preseason Player of the Year Makal, 6-3, 6-2.


Rookie of the Week

Anaya Brons, St. Thomas Aquinas
Freshman | Utrecht, Netherlands

Brons went 4-1 in STAC’s trio of victories over opponents West Chester, District of Columbia, and Post last week. The STAC freshman teamed up with Kathryn Kryuchkova at No. 2 doubles, falling to UDC's Celia Bastin and Claudia Bahamon Lopez, 6-3, before defeating Post's Annelein Van Urk and Melanie Leussink, 6-0. At No. 1 singles, the rookie held her own with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over West Chester's Delaney Tingle, a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory against UDC's Desire Parn, and a 6-2, 6-0 win versus Post's Megan Lombardt. 


ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Stephanie Baier, Daemen
Freshman | Boise, ID

Baier compiled a perfect 2-0 week, winning 6-1 on doubles with partner Carly Armitage for their fourth win together against Molloy. The Daemen freshman also defeated Julia Salazar of Molloy, 6-0, 6-0 for her second victory this year without dropping a set.

Celia Bastin, District of Columbia
Junior | Dinant, Belgium

Bastin went 3-1 in a 1-1 week for the Firebirds. In UDC's loss to STAC, she teamed up with Claudia Bahamon Lopez to defeat Anaya Brons and Kateryna Kryuchkova, 6-3, at No. 2 position. In the Firebirds’ 4-3 win over Queens, she went 2-0. At No. 2 doubles, she and Bahamon Lopez defeated Eva Rivoal and Apolline Lamy, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point. Bastin went on to clinch the winning point at the No. 4 position, battling out a three-set victory against Kyra Bergmann, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

Caroline Hany-Fawzy, Queens
Senior | Alexandria, Egypt

In Queens’ lone ECC match of the week, Hany-Fawzy earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory over UDC’s Claudia Bahamon at No. 3 singles to improve to 3-0 in ECC play on the year. 

Desire Parn, District of Columbia
Freshman | Parnu, Estoni'

Parn went 2-2 at No. 1 doubles and singles to split the week, 1-1. She and Zelenstova were slightly edged out by Elita Silins and Courtney Fyvie (STAC) in a tiebreaker, falling 7-6(3). She then went on to engage in a three set affair with Anaya Brons, where she dropped the tiebreaker 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Parn went 2-0 against Queens, winning 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. She went on to defeat Eva Rivoal, 6-3, 6-2, in singles play.

Mina Randjelovic, D’Youville
Freshman | Paracin, Spain

Randjelovic went 2-0 in D'Youville's win over ECC opponent Molloy this weekend. She won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.

Kseniya Zhdanok, D’Youville
Freshman | Minsk, Belarus

Zhdanok picked up two wins in D'Youville's 6-1 victory over conference opponent Molloy this weekend. At No. 1 doubles, she won 6-1 and at No. 1 singles, she won 6-3, 6-3.
