Late Rally Keys 70-64 Warriors' Victory
NORTH ANDOVER, MA. – Despite trailing for most of the
second half and with under four minutes to play, the Merrimack
women’s basketball team rallied, forcing late turnovers to
ignite a 16-4 run in the final 6:09 to edge Adelphi University
70-64 Saturday afternoon at the Volpe Gym.
Amanda Shannon (North Andover, MA) led the Warriors with 22 points
(10-12 from the free throw line), seven rebounds and six assists.
Eleven of her points came during the 16-4 run.
The Warriors overcame the dominating post performance from Gianna
Smith, who posted a double-double (28 points, 20 rebounds). The
Panthers out rebounded Merrimack 56-39 in the game and had 27
points off second-chance opportunities to Merrimack’s
eight.
Trailing 60-56 with 3:29 to play, Shannon drilled a three-pointer
to cut the lead to one. Takeya Faison (Lynn, MA) gave the Warriors
the lead with a fast-break jumper that originated off a Casey
Miller (Fairbanks, AK) steal. Seconds later, Miller would come up
with another steal which led to Shannon getting fouled and sinking
two free throws to give her team the three-point lead with 1:49 to
play. Shannon then sank a jumper and added four free throws over
the next 1:14 to preserve the comeback victory.
Faison finished with 13 points off the bench, while Kara Borelli
(Westbrook, ME) added 12 points and five rebounds.
Merrimack’s defense forced 29 Adelphi turnovers, led by three
steals from Miller. The Warriors also posted 15 more points off
free throws (25 to 10) than the Panthers.
Adelphi falls to 0-2 while Merrimack is 2-0 for the first time
since 2004-05. The Warriors will head to Fairbanks, Alaska, the
hometown of Miller, for the North Star Invitational. The action
kicks off next Saturday at midnight eastern time against Alaska
Fairbanks. The Warriors will play Saturday at 10:30 p.m. if they
lose to Fairbanks and midnight Sunday (eastern) if they win.
