Garden City, N.Y.- If you have had the opportunity to watch the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team play this season, you may have noticed the pink shafts they are playing with. This Saturday, April 26, the Panthers will raffle off four of the shafts with proceeds going to the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.
"Breast cancer impacts so many families, including several members of our team", Head Coach Joe Spallina said. "We feel this is a great way to raise money and awareness for a fantastic cause."
The #3 ranked Panthers (11-0) take on Bryant University at 5:30 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the team will recognize its graduating seniors. Raffle tickets and t-shirts will be sold throughout the game with the winners announced at the completion.
In October, 2007, the Adelphi Athletic Department launched the Jennifer Montgomery Breast Cancer Awareness Event, which helped to raise over $6,000 for the hotline through the sale of "Think Pink" wristbands, t-shirts and raffle baskets. The initiative carried over into basketball season, as the women's team participated in the WBCA's campaign and wore pink during their home game vs. New Haven on February 16.
