Golden Lions Edge Out Pioneers, 3-2, in ECC First Round

Pomona, N.Y. - The Golden Lions edge out the Pioneers of C.W. Post in the first round of the ECC Championship Tournament.  Sean Craig scored two runs en route to the 3-2 win.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single up the middle by Anthony Brunetti bringing in Tom Tolan who led off the inning with a basehit.

The Golden Lions tied up up in the bottom half  after a bunt single from Andrew Abreu was followed up by two failed double play attempts to even the score at one.

Leftfielder Craig led off the fourth with a double to left and moved over by a groundball to thr right side.  Centerfielder Rob Veltre lifted on just deep enough for Craig to slide in ahead of the throw for a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short lived as the Pioneers came back on an RBI double in the rightcenter field gap by Brunetti.  A heads up defensive play on the batter by Adam Brown caught Brunetti in a run down for the second out of the inning before getting Keith Herring to strike out and end the inning.

Dowling went back on top 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth.  Craig reached on a fielder's choice and went first to third on a single by JC Brandmaier.  The CWP second baseman Angel Pimentel was unable to bring in a pop fly by Veltre enabling Craig to come home.  

Rich Maccaronne led off the ninth with a single through the right side.  JJ Bessell, who entered the game in relief in the seventh inning, got Tom Kastelan to pop up his bunt attempt and caught Tolan looking for out number two.  On a 3-2 pitch with Maccarone off on the pitch, freshman short stop Kyle DeMeo made a diving catch towards the middle for the final out.

Abreu finished the day with two hits and a run scored to lead the Golden Lions at the plate.

Brown gets credited with the win going six innings allowing two runs on six hits.  Bessell tossed three scoreless innings of relief with just three hits.

The Golden Lions face the top seed St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans at 12:00 PM.
